Update (2023-06-18)
Heya! If you're reading this, you're visiting my Patreon page at just the right time :)
I'm about to release the first major rewrite of Cloze Overlapper for newer Anki versions (2.1.54 and up), but want to collect a bit more feedback through some early testing fist. So ahead of the upcoming release announcement, I've snuck in the latest beta of the Cloze Overlapper rewrite below (named NEW-...). You'll need Anki 2.1.54 or later to give it a try (though it works best on Anki 2.1.65). If you run into any issues please do let me know by commenting below.
Some of the known issues right now include:
- Some minor weirdness when undoing multi-line cloze edits
- Collision with the Customize Keyboard Shortcut add-on
Many thanks in advance for giving the release a try!

Original post:
Hi everybody,
Following up on my updates over the last days, I'm happy to share another quick goodie with you: Attached to this post you'll find a development release of Cloze Overlapper that (mostly) works on Anki versions up to 2.1.49.
This is not the major update and rewrite that I have been working on (with full 2.1.50+ support), but rather a quick bandaid-ed build of the legacy CO branch to make sure that you can continue using Cloze Overlapper on a reasonably recent Anki version (since a lot of you have understandably been asking if there's a more recent version I can upload for now).
Anki 2.1.49 is currently available on Anki's download page as the previously recommended stable release. Since that list is constantly updated, I am also including a link to the 2.1.49 release directly on GitHub in case the homepage link is no longer available.
My hope with this release is that it will help bridge things over for you guys until the actual proper Cloze Overlapper update that's coming.
Installation
- Make sure you are on Anki 2.1.49 or lower (if you are on a newer version, see here on how to downgrade)
- Then simply download and double-click the attached .ankiaddon file
Known Issues
- On Anki 2.1.45 and up, using the cloze hotkey or button will not properly wrap highlighted text with overlapping cloze markers (e.g. [[oc1::Hello]]), instead showing a warning saying "Cloze deletion can only be used in fields with use the 'cloze' filter).
Workaround: For simple lists, simply type in the list with one item per line into the Original field, and then use the Generate overlapping clozes button ([[.] icon) to generate the field content. For more complex lists, you will unfortunately have to type the overlapping cloze markers manually for now. - On Anki 2.1.45 and up, clicking on Add will not automatically generate the field content necessary to create the overlapping clozes, resulting in a warning saying "You have a cloze notetype but have not made any cloze deletions".
Workaround: Before adding your cards, always click on the Generate overlapping clozes button ([[.]). - On Anki 2.1.41 and up, the "Remove Cloze Markers" button might not work as expected.
Workaround: You can use this tiny add-on instead (however, please note that it only works for removing regular clozes)
My apologies for these issues! They will be addressed in the fully reworked version of Cloze Overlapper that's coming up. Anki's editor screen has undergone a lot of changes over the past few Anki revisions, and so this has sadly been one of the areas most affected by add-on breakages.
Thanks again for your patience!
