Important note (2021-09-12): Over the past few releases Anki has undergone a lot of changes. While these have improved the app by quite a bit, they have also left a larger number of add-ons broken and made it very difficult for add-on authors to keep up. BetterTags has also been affected by this.

Therefore please note that the current version of BetterTags only fully works on Anki 2.1.40 and below. If you are willing to use a slightly older version of Anki with better support for a lot of add-ons there, then you can find the official downloads for Anki  2.1.40 here: macOS, Windows, Linux.

For those of you on newer Anki releases: An update for the latest version of Anki is in the works and will release later this year!

In the meantime please do check out some of my recently released add-ons for newer Anki versions, e..g. the Colorful Tags add-on which brings BetterTags tag coloring and pinning to Anki 2.1.45 and up!

--- Original post below ---

It's been almost one and a half years since BetterTags first saw the light of day, revolutionizing tag management in Anki forever.

Today I'm happy to say that Anki's tag system stands before its next big leap forward: BetterTags v1.0.0, the new best way to manage tags in Anki!

BetterTags v1.0.0 is the result of a months long development effort, fueled by your support, and your diligent feedback on earlier releases. Thanks to your help I was able to fully rewrite BetterTags, making it the fastest, most feature-rich, and easiest to use it has ever been.

Among the headlining new features are:

Batch-support for almost all actions

Be it moving, deleting, coloring, or even creating filtered decks – next to all BetterTags actions now support multiple items! (see intro video)

Editing tags in place

Annoying pop-up windows be gone! You can now edit tags right within the sidebar:

Custom colors for your tags

Lend your tag sidebar some much needed flair by using the new coloring feature!

Hierarchy-aware pinning

Give your important tags the priority they deserve without having to resort to prepending them with weird symbols!

Persistent tag state

Both tag expansion state, colors, and pinned tags persist across closing the browser window and even restarting Anki!

Excellence in usability

Almost all user interface interactions have been rethought from the ground up to provide you with the best possible user experience. Things like item selection, keyboard focus, and state persistence work just the way you feel they should, making BetterTags v1.0.0 an absolute pleasure to use.

Fully-featured options menu

Gone are the days of digging through obscure config files! Here's BetterTags brand-new options menu:

Breakneck performance

Spend less time waiting for actions to complete, and more time studying! Across-the-board optimizations allow BetterTags v1.0.0 to deliver best-in-class performance on all supported actions:

Future-proofed and ready-to-use

BetterTags v1.0.0 has been designed from the ground up to support the latest and greatest in Anki development while still maintaining backwards-compatibility with earlier versions (Anki 2.1.10 required at minimum. For the best possible experience please upgrade to Anki version 2.1.17 or later).

Jump in!

There is so much more I could talk about here, like all of the new options, countless bug fixes, and minor tweaks you'd only be aware of if you specifically looked for them. But I feel at this point you're probably way too giddy to read through them!

So, for the add-on aficionados reading this, head over to the download post* that should be ready in a second, and experience BetterTags v1.0.0 yourselves (the full changelog will also be posted there). I'm stoked to see all of the inventive new ways in which you'll put all of these new features to use!

(*If you're reading this in the future, make sure to check out the BetterTags Patreon filter to grab whatever latest release is available at that point)

Thank you!

In closing, let me just say that I've been absolutely humbled by your guys' support over the past few months. Pushing out multiple projects of this scope each year would simply be impossible without your help. It's your support that made it possible to fully vet and test BetterTags across macOS, Windows, and Linux for the first time; and it's thanks to your support that I had the time to refine v1.0.0 to this point. Thanks so much for that, and for everything else! You guys truly are the best.

Thanks again, and happy tagging!

P.S.: I'm late with this, I know, but I hope your all have had an amazing start into the new year, with review streaks a-plenty to look back to, and even more to follow in 2020. Thanks again!

Does the Add-on work with Anki 2.1.40?

Hi David, I just updated the download with a newer version of the add-on from earlier this year. This should work up to Anki 2.1.40.

Hi, is there a way to report bugs? I have a bug while loading the extension. `object 'Browser' has no attribute 'SidebarTreeView'`
