Gibson Girl Page 8 (Patreon)
Content
Happy Sunday folks!
I knew I would enjoy drawing these later pages but they're getting more and more fun as I'm able to settle into the Gibson style.
I'm finding it really interesting to discover how to use lines in a way I haven't before. Usually I kind of treat things with a certain amount of mono-width just to keep things simple but with this I'm allowed to use the finest hair lines if I really want.
It's a dangerous thing for me to allow myself to have because I wanna go crazy with lines, but Gibson's excellence in his restraint. For all the hatching he does, it's where he allows lines to disappear or chooses not to put any that are really powerful.
The second image is my version of this page 30 minutes prior to the first one. Every once in a while I zoom out and realize things are becoming a bit of a mess and I just take out lines and it magically adds a sense of light, volume and lightness.
There might be some issues with this page but I love that I was able to get this to work:
These lines have to do a lot of work. Sometimes they're tone, sometimes they're movement, or volume, or light or shadow. I'm really pleased with how the dark edge of the front thigh creates this heavy gash that the brighter hand can press into. Plus all the drapery lines can then thin out as they approach the hand to function as speed lines to accelerate the movement.
Drawing is so weird and cool.
