EDIT: Forgot to attach the right timelapse! Whoopsie!

Hey all! I don't often show these bits and pieces in a row like this but since I can only attach the timelapse instead of uploading it as a video (I need to find a better way to host this stuff).
A big part of my childhood is Pokemon, which I'm sure is true of a lot of us, but specifically these Ken Sugimori illustrations. Gentle noisy watercolor texture and a soft, limited palette. It's a delight.

Something that I take for granted about art from this period is that I always see it either as a scan or in low quality prints, rarely do I see a nicely reproduced illustration of this era in an art book (Recommendations anyone?)
As a result I think a lot of our perceptions of what makes this art feel the way it does is the way it was printed which was often really cheaply in weekly serialized mangas. The halftone of the printing is almost as integral as the watercolor used to color this stuff in.

This is something I love about art--that you can trigger a reaction in someone's brain based on something they've already seen out in the world and make them relate those two types of images, made across decades, and link them together without the viewer even realizing it's happening.

My efforts in making  things feel really shonen stop a little shy of making the eyes massive and faces round and squishy but I think it would be a lot of fun to be kind of indulgent and just temporarily put on a mangaka hat and pretend to be an Akira Toriyama understudy for a comic :)

Thank you all for the support this month, I hope my ramblings make some kind of sense!
