Thank you for the support over the month of February! IT was really satisfying to be able to wrap up Poppy & Oak and get it up on gumroad. A tedious but necessary process for me.

Also I really enjoyed getting to do some pinups that you all helped vote on! I think I'd like to keep on drawing more of those whenever I just need a mental break from the more difficult work for me, like writing/ thumbnailing Ivy & Pine.

Speaking of--thanks for your patience on that front. I get a little better at the process of making a comic each time I sit down to do it, and I sometime I have to reel myself back in and make a simple one now and again. I think I'd like Ivy & Pine to be a two color comic again.

Gold patrons probably already saw some of these exploration sketches in full a week or so ago. I'm doing my best to figure out a satisfying storyline for these two by just sketching them a bunch and getting used to their shapes.

I recently finished reading Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa and the size of that tome and his way of storytelling has uh, intimidated me a bit with their scope haha.

Finally--while the polls were going on I've still been troubleshooting the inkjet print stuff. Very very close on that front and I'll be letting you all know the moment they're ready for print. I plan to do these as a kinda limited edition small size until I'm totally out of these small rigid mailers I've got lying around. Also--what's that in the corner there...some kinda postage stamp lookin' Poppy sticker???

Oh man, I have a mighty need for stickers...

Seeing you make physical products makes me wish I didn’t live so far away. 🥲

Wuff_Boman

Question is...WHERE can we buy? :D Even though yeah, shipping might hurt...

Can’t wait to buy whatever poppy/oak stuff there is!! Do you have a storefront where they’ll be up, or is it over patreon?

wintonkidd

I haven't quite gotten that sorted out just yet but I'll make a special post to announce it when ready!

I'm working on exploring gumroad as a physical fulfillment platform vs. a different one I can integrate into my website-- I'll know pretty soon whichever way I go and I'll make a post about it!

Miyazaki's Nausicaä is one of the best things I have ever read and not nearly enough people know of it let alone have read it.

wintonkidd

It's very impactful, and so different from the film! I would have read it sooner if I knew how different it was!

Molly Skyfire

Right??? It's a travesty. It's one of the most poignant mythological stories I've read in years.

If it makes you feel better re:Nausicaa, Winton, Miyazaki himself felt kind of haunted by it. Took hims years to do it, and he's on record saying that in some ways he made animated films in order to procrastinate from working on Nausicaa. But the story just wouldn't leave him alone, it demanded to be finished. In that way it's rather like Lord of the Rings in the sense that it became an unwilling obsession that the author felt powerless to resist. Knowing that has the effect of disarming my impulse to compare my work to his, at least for a bit. Anyway, fantastic work this month as always! Looking forward to another month of shenanigans. <3

I just finished a biography about Miyazaki too! I've been, uh, interested in him lately 😉 I also found that to be a comfort. If nothing else it's nice to know that nothing is made under ideal circumstances and that's just part of the process. Thanks for your support, buddy!

Oh rad! Was it "Starting Point"? I had that one a while back, admittedly only read bits and pieces but it was fascinating nonetheless. But yeah, you n he have some of the same energy in ways - that love of retro, down-to-earth vibes oozes out of your work just as much as a Miyazaki film.

wintonkidd

Starting Point is the one in working on now but I first did the audiobook of Miyazakiworld. I agree with you that Starting Point is very very dense, but I like that it's in his own words! It's interesting being able to read them in context, knowing what film he was working on when he wrote them! And you pay me a giant, giant compliment, comparing my work to his! I'm impressed by how personal his films seem to be after learning more about his life!

Molly Skyfire

Hey, I call's em like I see's em. As Miyazaki-san often complains, many artists are drawing copies of copies of copies, just repackaged and amplified tropes over and over and over again. Your work has a refreshing sense of groundedness, there's a sense of observations based on life. And the tropes and styles you do incorporate are ones that aren't touched as much by and large, so they're still fresh haha. Point is, you do damn good work and you should feel good about it.

wintonkidd

After reading all that, I will feel good about it, thank you 💗
