There have been a lot of people on social media announcing that everyone should delete patreon immediately.

However. From a creator’s standpoint:

I want everybody to be safe. So if there is indeed some sort of threat to security on Patreon’s end confirmed, I will share that with you.

But I urge you not to jump to deleting your account right away due to unconfirmed information. Many artists, myself included, rely on this income to put food on the table.

I’ve already had a number of people leave due to this. But if it turns out to be a false warning, it could ruin a lot of artists abilities to continue their work due to potentially false information.

I will keep doing digging as best as I can while traveling. If I find concerning information I will share it with you all right away.

[For Context:

Patreon laid off 5 security employees.

One of these employees stated publicly that the “entire security team” was laid off.

Some interviews have Patreon stating this is false, and that a majority of their security engineers are still on the job, while others say they’ve made no comment.]

From this I thought they got hacked or something, but all I found is that they fired five people who work in security, so they can outsource it more, which I don't think is that bad.

I just read another article just like that.

5 whole cybersecurity specialists / security engineers for a multimillion dollar company? Sounds quite weird. I'd expect at least a team of 10 or more. It's also quite possible they contract security out, especially if they don't own their own datacenters and lease, and that in-house team was probably there to be the POC for the datacenters they partner with or something. Kind of like making sure that the company's best interests are kept in mind and whatnot.

Patreon has done these customer relations blunders before. It is important that everyone be aware of their own risks and the potential dangers of a security failure. Right now, I do not see enough evidence or new risk for me to leave the platform or to drop anyone. Yet. That said, Patreon keeps making 'questionable' public decisions, refuses to listen to their own creators / patrons (sometimes 'with attitude'), and repeatedly causes these panics. It is always a good idea to keep other options open where available. The best summary I have read is Soatok's blog. Know your risk, and make your decisions accordingly. Thanks.

Yeah... If Patreon only had 5 employees related to security it would be quite alarming ahahah
