The Behind the Scenes of Mistress Fennec Shand (Patreon)
Content
I figured I might share a few details from the behind the scenes of the Shand piece. It began with posing.
Rough sketch lines figuring out the positions, the only real pose reference I used was one for the hands holding up the leash (a spreader bar in the original) and began to sketch the outfit. I figured maybe some sort of wrap to cover her cybernetic pieces, sheer to show them off, while all the straps pay homage to her outfit as well as the various entertainers in Jabba’s palace like Oola and Lyn Me. The tightness of the straps was a…homage in a way to a shot in TBoBF with a close up on her (clothed) thigh, and the strap of her holster creating a bit of tightness.
Lines over her stomach and thighs that kind of give a resemblance to Colossus in X-Men were to sort of figure out the shape and contours of her form. It didn’t exactly help in shading (because I didn‘t/forgot to use them) but they helped in the design process.
The cybernetics within were deceptively easy. I drew the cutaway, filled it in with colour, and then using a light grey and brown and a spray-like brush, followed the basic shapes and layout seen in the Hot Toys figure. I think it ended up giving a better sense of detail and depth than even I expected, and looks like it’s suggesting a lot more than it actually is.
Although I’m honestly still not sure how those cybernetics helped her survive a shot to the abdomen.
Hopefully this was somewhat interesting and I’ll be sure to include more artist statements with the pieces in future.
