BTS trainees. Yes. Suga, RM, and J-Hope were part of the elimination process. If they hadn’t improved dance/sing/rap they would not have debuted as Bangtan Sonyeondon. Suga and RM might have remained in the company as writers/producers. The final members weren’t chosen until just a few months before debut. Jimin being a trainee for only 9 months gives you a clue to his performance talent, especially because he didn’t do any previous training for singing before becoming a trainee at Big Hit.

The final lineup for BTS wasn’t chosen until around December 2012. About 6 months before BTS’s debut. So in that 6 months leading up to debut, they worked on their music/choreography for their debut, but prior to that, they all could still get cut, even the rap line. Members will train for years while continuously being evaluated (and cut) until the company decides they have the lineup they want. Jimin had the shortest training period. He didn’t join BigHit until May of 2012, so the fact that he made the final lineup just 6 months later is amazing. Also, I just want to point out that a final lineup being chosen and them being introduced to the public, still doesn’t guarantee a debut. BigHit had been training a new boy group for the last couple of years, had pre-debut content like they did for BTS so fans could get to know them, had announced the final lineup etc. and then right around the time they were rumored to debut soon, BigHit canceled the entire project and they were basically disbanded before they even started, so it’s very cut throat and nothing is ever guaranteed pre-debut. Seventeen is under Pledis which, yes, is now under Hybe Labels after BigHit acquired them back in 2020 (before Hybe was created). The labels under Hybe are in the same building now and sometimes people from different groups might see each other in the cafeteria or the Artist gym, but their schedules are all so different it’s not that common for them to really be able to interact with each other (unless something like this is scheduled).

Just random ramblings: since you asked about Seventeen being part of same agency. HYBE will soon have more artists under their wing. They just became controlling shareholders of SM (formerly one of the BIG 3). And BTS brought in the cash to allow them to get this big. Yoongi doesn't usually participate in TikTok challenges but he did with seventeen: https://www.tiktok.com/@luff_xxi/video/7198169231412956462?q=suga%20seventeen&t=1676034370035 On Festa 2022 Yoongi, of handedly, mentioned that he talks to a lot of younger artists ... they must see him as open to these types of conversations. RM was wondering why no one contacts him ... I recently found a creator who is analyzing how the BTS members speak. He confirms how much I miss because I don't speak Korean. He indicated that RM speaks in an unusual manner that might sound intimidating to many. I'm curious to see his analysis of Yoongi.. Thanks for your reaction...eating something beforehand probably helped you...

😳 Jimin! I never thought of it that way! And I mean could you imagine a bts or world for that matter without the seven we have now? Divine intervention? Maybe!

This one was my favorite so far, even more than the one with RM! Suga is such a great mentor and I really hope that other artists take notice of how willing he is to share his wisdom! Also, I desperately want some janky ARMYBOT shades my dude- I love everything about them including crooked letters, truly. Have a great day Johnny!

Virginia

This makes me wonder in what way RM speaks that would be considered unusual and thus intimidating. Does the creator have a YouTube channel? I’m so curious now. Thank you for sharing this tidbit. 💜

I read somewhere or watched something that had V part of a different group more of a ballad group but it got canceled and V was moved over to BTS instead . I could be wrong but I'm sure I saw this somewhere.

this is the one about RM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YOYRVgr9og

The KPop training system is explained pretty well in the first episode of the rise of bangtan. They discuss how KPop started in the 90’s & then they discuss how talent is identified & trained. They have multiple idols talking about the trainee process & having friends cut every month & the stress of being afraid of being cut. They sing about it in Jungkook’s verse of Run BTS when he says please don’t send me home. Also Jimin has talked about he was almost cut every month. I have no idea why they were telling him that. I don’t know if it was a tactic to push him harder or what but I think it’s what led to him working so hard as a trainee. They said he would often sleep in the practice studio which was extremely sad to me. If you want to understand better watch the first episode of the rise of bangtan again. While BTS have been a part of their songwriting & producing process since the beginning (which is not the case for most K-pop groups) the training system was not that different. RM, Suga & J-Hope were trainees for several years before they debuted. BTS was originally going to be a hip hop focused group & they had other members. They changed the direction & decided to add vocalists with Jin, Jungkook & Tae having around 2 years of training, then Jimin under a year. But there were others potential members when they were trainees. Probably at least 20.

I definitely think it was destiny! Like you say I can't imagine the group without one of them.

I enjoyed your reaction to this! Suga was such a great mentor to Hoshi. I was also drinking along haha - you are to blame you got me into soju!! haha This was my first time trying it and OMG I love it - I have the strawberry one and I have plum in the fridge for later. While you were drinking and saying how much they drank, it occurred to me while it's true they drank a lot, I imagine the original conversation was probably longer than 40 mins and they edited it down? So they maybe drank that much over the course of an hour maybe even an hour and a half-2 hours. Might be worth bearing that in mind when trying to match them drink for drink my friend! XD

Eva

But they drank whiskey and coke, not whiskey neat, so you did very well 😅 About the trainee thing: J-Hope was almost cut as a trainee and quit before that could happen. RM talked both him and bighit around to get him to come back. They talked about that and how Jimin was close to being cut in Bring The Soul when the six oldest members all sit together after the concert where JK was so close to fainting. I can’t even imagine BTS without these two, my biases 😱 (or any of the others!) But I feel like MAYBE RM was more or less guaranteed to make it - according to the „BTS vs K-Pop“ video essay on YouTube by bby gang mag (worth a watch, it’s an interesting and informative look at whether BTS is K-Pop or not), which seems trustworthy to me, RM was the reason Bang PD started the BTS project in the first place. He signed RM and then needed a project to put him in, so he started looking for other rappers. I’m just glad it all somehow turned out the way it did 😅

ME!! I saw seventeen in D.C. last year. I want to see them again though Hoshi and Joshua werent there because they had covid but it was still such an amazing concert!

MarilynPF

John, I watched closely and you did miss one drink.. just sayin… 😉

Barbara F.

You're so right he's such a good host and mentor for younger generation of k-pop !!! Loved watching it with you 💜💜

Jesi Ryan

I’m reminded of when younger Suga invited himself over to see Seo Taiji’s studio, and now he is having Hoshi over. So cute!

Purplehaze

Hey John! I noticed your reaction when you saw a clip of a performance trailer that BTS did with a lot of dancers. Here is the link for that if you want to check it out: https://youtu.be/S1Up-ZzHmuw

Maya

Hybe buying shares of SM is not the same as Hybe having Pledis, Big Hit etc. So we can't really say that there would be more artists under Hybe as of now.

Lane. L.

I just appreciate artists who know how to give credit to BTS. Because they did pave the way. For me personally, I got introduced to a lot of Korean artists and music through them. Anyhow, that was a great reaction. As ARMYs, we know that Yoongi is food with his words. Now, others are seeing another side of him through his show. 💜

Yo John! I have been binge watching all of your reactions of Suchwita and one episode I really do recommend is with Woozi! He is also from Seventeen and is usually called Suga's Doppleganger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHCjuxn2H9s&pp=ygUOc3VjaHdpdGEgd29vemk%3D
