forgot my poke-ball gown

For those interested, there's a bit of personal backstory about the pikachub shirt:

When I was in high school it was really uncool to like pokemon because teens are idiots and decide on a whim what is acceptable to like. I was really into pokemon back then and I had a pikachu shirt that my mom had bought me a year or so ago. I loved that shirt and I generally wore it on weekends to celebrate not having to go to school. I made sure not to ever have it on to school in fear of getting made fun for it. One monday however, I was late to school and just got dressed real quick. We had ceramics in art class that day so I had to take off my hoodie and to my horror realized I'd worn the pikachu shirt underneath. Tried to hide it but the other teens of course saw it and made a complete mockery out of it. The amount of shit I got for just having worn that shirt for a single day was baffling. People would bring it up a year later and always ask me idiotic things like "lol do pokemon turn you on?... you know coz... you had a shirt... " After high school nobody of course cared and I even played pokemon in school with some friends from another class. It never came up again but thinking back it just feels absolutely mental how you can get bullied for something so ridicilously insignificant.

The situation in the comic is not of course the same, young adults in university don't act like braindead teenagers and most university students seem to be okay with liking pokemon. Tessa just uses the shirt as something to latch on when it comes to Saiya, otherwise no one would really care. However I wanted to include this as a personal nod to an important event that I will probably remember for the rest of my life. I think the ordeal itself made me stronger about not caring what others think, but I would still not wish that on any teenager.

Anyway, that's the story about what the pikachub shirt is based on!

It’s interesting to know the origin of stuff like this! I think everyone can relate to that story in some way.

Oh, man. I can relate to your story. When I was 10 my mother got me a shirt that had Superman flying through a newspaper on it. I was already picked for being smart, and for having “the weird name nobody could pronounce.” Well, when the other kids saw the shirt they started calling me Clark, probably because I also wore glasses. I never wore that shirt ever again, but everyone called me Clark for a month. I hated it. 35 years later I still can’t think about it without feeling a little bit of the same things I did back then.

Thanks for sharing! It's funny how something so silly can become so annoying when it's used on purpose to make fun of you. And especially when it's something so innocent like just having a shirt on.

Any time I got asked about whatever I was interested in, whether it was a piece of clothing or just hearing me talk about it, I'd always say "Heck yeah! It's really cool!" then be a nerd and name off several stuff that'd I'd think people would be surprised at. I remember being asked about My Little Pony, since I'd wear a Rarity shirt without a care, and my go-to was showing Fluttershy snapping a bear's neck without context >w> Afterwards, people pretty much just got used to me being into whatever the hell I liked cause it was fun to me >w>

That's... Really heartbreaking They say teens are cruel but that statement really undersells just how awful they can actually be. On my end I was "one if the weird ones" but never really bullied for it. I didn't respect my classmates at all but now I find myself feeling... Thankful since they never really gave me shit for my openly nerdy behavior (I was playing Pokemon in class I legit didn't give a fuck) Storywise I really like how things are progressing. So far so sweet. Feel free to take breaks and pace yourself if you need to!

How could somebody not like pokemon, they are animals from a tv show/game and people are saying they are dumb like dafuq. I don't know if it's different every country but bullies rarely get what they deserve and teachers wow they suck at dealing with bullies. The only way I could deal with it is reflecting it back at them. Until my friends Chinese dad got involved and then they begged to be friends after that. Scary

I can totally relate... Kids latched on to the weirdest stuff to mock us for. My name, my height (I'm short as hell), the clothes I'd wear... At the time it was super heartbreaking because I was already dealing with traumatic stuff, but in retrospect I think they didn't really realize the full extent of what they were doing. That said, I've got a new name, my height makes me cute as a button, and dresses fit a lot better than Zelda T-shirts, so I guess it worked out! 💕

I like where this is going lol

A Man Named Jed

That sort of thing happened at my school to but with anime in general. I got a lot of flak over a DBZ binder I had. On a more amusing note will we be hearing more about the squid?

after reading the context thing - its okay pokemon is based, they were the stupid

I remember what it was like to be the only person at school who liked Pokemon/Nintendo. I'm sorry you had to deal with such asshole-ry, and I'm happy that you've come out the other side.

That's really cool of you to share that with us. I respect you for finding some positivity in an otherwise needlessly cruel situation. People at that age often don't realize the weight of their actions. On the other hand, keep up the good work.

Man thats sad to hear, kipper Now have them make out

Anthill33

i always feel bad hearing stuff like that kip. i had enough friends that liked pokemon that whenever someone would make fun of one of us for liking pokemon we would just make fun of them for not

Thank you so much for sharing a personal story! I can definitely identify with that. It was not cool at all to like ANYTHING nerdy (anime especially) when I was in High School... It was severely disappointing. I know in middle school I had another boy rip up a drawing I had made of Charmander actually. I was livid.
