Dan, when it comes to heel flaps and yarn... Just remember to divide in half - You divide the total number of CO sts by 2 to obtain the number of sts for your heel flap (i.e., 64 st CO = 32 heel flap sts). Then, just knit the heel flap the same number of rows (or thereabouts) as you have heel flap sts (i.e., 64 st CO = 32 heel flap sts = 32 heel rows = 16 garter stitch ridges if you use the garter stitch edge).

I loved hearing you talk about socks and you have inspired me. I teach toe-up-two-at-a-time socks and while I do make sure they leave class with a formula, I think I will be emphasizing using DK weight yarn for their first few socks and developing a written pattern/formula for them to follow! Thanks!
