Long ago in the Before Times I would set my VCR every day before going to school to record Robotech, then watch that new episode after I got home. Unfortunately there was a storm (wouldn’t be the first time it would happen when I taped episodes) so this particular episode would be one of my least viewed since it was nearly unwatchable. The joys of rabbit ears and rural living. 😂

I always loved this episode, in particular because we make contact with the Robotech Expeditionary Force for the first time! This is the first reference to the SDF-3 Pioneer and the fact that the Robotech Expeditionary Force is unable to return to Earth at this time. This is the first real acknowledgement that Earth has a whole fleet out there, somewhere in deep space currently. General Adam Reinhardt, who is referenced as being in command of the REF currently, was also seen in The Sentinels (bald guy with beard).

I know much about the days of OTA TV. I've spent much time with a pipe wrench on the roof, rain or shine, to adjust the antennal to make sure I was able to watch the channel for Robotech. I was so grateful when cable TV became cheap enough to switch over.

Not a problem. We know even you are not immune to life interruptus.

If you're wondering what to do next Gundam's One Year War would be the obvious choice. It was Robotech (and Macross in Japan) lead competition. Very similar story telling and art even. Unlike Robotech unfortunately, Gundam has continued all the way to today.

As for the REF Ship, the REF can't send anymore help because the SDF-3 and fleet are currently engaging the Invid on Tirol. Rick and his men are fighting the Invid King over the Masters Homeworld. That's what the Sentinels as a series was going to cover, and the Film set up. The Masters and the REF passed each other in space. The Robotech Expeditionary Force was to go to Tirol and attempt to deal with the Masters, peacefully if possible, but the Masters abandoned Tirol to go to Earth to get the Protoculture. Instead of a diplomatic mission the REF arrived to Tirol infested with Invid and were dragged into a war against them. Now the Earth has forces at home and on Tirol fighting two wars against two factions (who are also ironically fighting each other) and everyone is fighting over the same resource, Protoculture. We and the Masters use it as Fuel. The Zentrati and Masters use it as well for Bio Engineering. The Invid eat the shit to live and for Bio Engineering and use it kinda like the Spice from Dune, but every one needs it. Protoculture itself seems to be an obvious fuel source but also has characteristics that prolongs life and can be used to splice with DNA to change characteristics. This is why the Zentrati and Masters scoff at Micronions as Humans seem to have only worked out its obvious use as a fuel source and completely ignored any use as a biological substance. The Invid eats the stuff (once it molds over into the Flower of Life) Then through Digestion they can internalize the stuff to change their own characteristics. (like the Spice from Dune) The Masters and Zentrati seem to have figured out through technology to do similar stuff in a VAT. Humans just see it as "space oil", it powers ships and weapon systems with near unlimited power and we're fine with that.

Best description of Protoculture I've heard yet! Thank you, my friend, I think I finally 'get it' :D
