I believed I mentioned this before that the interactions among the characters often between the different sides of the war bring the biggest surprises. As of this episode, number of the days left before Human life on Earth goes extinict: 318

Gamilan Characters Eruc Domel - Military Defense Commander of the Gamilan Empire (Small Magellanic Cloud theater), Lieutenant General. We're finally introduced to Lt General Domel, aka the 'Space Wolf' or "The Wolf of Space" famous for his number of victories protecting the Small Magellanic Cloud from incursion from 'barbarian' forces. Domel is highly regarded by his subordinates from his personal staff to rank and file for his noble qualities and chivalrous nature towards opponents who gain his respect in battle. Though these same qualities has made him some enemies among fellow high ranked officers. While Domel favors remaining away from the center of the court of politics, he is greatly favored by Emperor Dessler. Domel features a strong fit physique and very young for his rank standing. Domel's brown hair is trim very short. Bem Haidern - Senior Staff Officer of the 6th Armored Division, serving under Military Defense Commander Eruc Domel, introduced this episode with Eruc Domel and fellow officer Fomto Berger (see below). Colonel Haidern is a officer who worked his way up to his current position. As a senior overseer of Domel's staff, he often berates the recklessness of younger officers. Most outstanding physical feature of Colonel Haidern is the eye patch he wears over his right eye. Fomto Berger - Commander of the 7 Destroyer squadron, 6th Armored Division, under Military Defense Commander Eruc Domel. Major Berger is one of Lt General Domel's youngest officer and is often see as also being the most reckless by Colonel Haidern. Berger features short cut purple gray hair and bears a scar on the lower left side of his face. Melda Deitz - 2nd Lieutenant in the imperial spacefleet and shares the same sense of honor and and sense of duty that embodies her father Gul Deitz. Not a new chracter, but figured I would make a note that she is a skilled ace pilot of a Gamilan Tsvuelke space fighter. Her striking feather is her red hair Gul Deitz - Supreme commander of the Great Gamilan Astro Fleet. An experienced Admiral in charge of the all elements of the empire's space fleet. A proud man but with a strong sense of honor to duty. Gul features a scar that runs though the right side of his face, gray hair at the Earth equivalent age of 55 years and a well trimmed mustache.

While it's absolutely correct to say that war between Earth and Gamilas would have broken out no matter who fired first, I do think the fact that it was humanity firing that first shot caused the particular response we see from the Gamilans - bombarding Earth from a distance until no living thing remains. Note the battle at the beginning of the episode. Another world resisting invasion, refusing to surrender. However that world still looks pristine, not reduced to a dying husk by countless planet bombs like Earth. Instead, the Gamilan fleet attacks and destroys the defenders, presumably to force a surrender once the civilisation on the planet realise the hopelessness of further resistance. With humanity on the other hand, after a brief foray into the inner system to wipe out the colony on Mars, the Gamilans pulled back to the outer system, only engaging in combat when Earth sent fleets their way, instead relying on the planet bombs to wipe out humanity for them. Just my guess, but I think humanity firing first was taken as such an affront by the Gamilans that they decided utter annihilation of these 'barbaric' people was the only fitting response. (Also, if you were so inclined, there's probably some links to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbour that could be drawn, since this show isn't exactly shy about the WW2 callbacks, what with the Yamato and all - unfortunately this line of thinking ends up with the show being essentially 'WW2 but this time Japan wins!' which, err. let's not go down that road!)
