One of the best of the series.

Content Warning - I basically weep from tip to tail in this one :)

Now that you've seen this episode and commented on the scene where Naomi rescues Lucia, I think you'll enjoy watching the YouTube video "The Cinematography of The Expanse | Camera & Lighting Breakdown." It describes a lot of behind the scenes information. There are no scenes shown beyond what you've already seen, no no spoilers.

Perfect time to release two episodes back to back 🫠😜

"This show isn't bigger than Star Wars or being talked about from everybody..." 1000% agreed; I find it absolutely mind boggling that this is not a popular series in the line of how everyone talks about Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Easily the best sci-fi anything I've ever watched with nothing coming as a close second. In one way I'm floored it's not praised more but at the same time I'm glad it's not a Star Trek level success lest Hollywood milk it dry and ruin what was a glorious thing like it does all globally popular IPs! But then I still find myself wanting to be back in this universe, dying for the last three books and even more. Never been more invested in a fictional verse than this show! For now I live it by watching every Reactor that watches this show (think now I'm at least at 25+ rewatches now if not more via Reactors) not counting my own personal rewatches. While to some it may sound crazy but for me this show is my all time favorite ANYTHING I've ever seen on screen regardless of genre or it being a tv show or movie!

Before I became a member, I think I warned you that you will be angry about the fact that this show isn't recognized. It is on par with any S-Tier show ever. I will die on that hill. And this ride isn't even close to over my friend. Without going spoiler mode, one of my favorite things about this entire series is that it "expands" so well. It is almost exponential by season, the story jumps in scale from a detective story about a missing daughter, to a galactic network with ancient aliens, while keeping it real with great "show, not tell" storytelling.

Yeah, something you should not do, same with the alarm in the morning, when you look on your phone to see how much sleep you have left; you have to look right after the intro to not feel bad about it or get surprised by it! 3 days straight without sleep - glad he got that nap in right before the shootout with Murtry.

BTW, I meant to congratulate you for watching the nexr-to-last episode of S4 without once saying "penultimate,: 🙃

Right there with you Shawn. I have never been more invested in a show and we are talking decades of TV watching. This show has completely spoiled me for other TV. Its exciting that new reactors keep coming on line and I never never never get tired of not only seeing my favorite characters over and over but also seeing the reactors become fans and fall in love with this fantastic show!! I am SOOO excited for S5 (and 6 of course) but 5 is special. But this episode was phenomenal from beginning to end. As I said earlier, I love Elvi and Fayez!! Here's to books 7-9 making their way into our Expanse TV Universe some day!!

So one of my reactors is Nerdy Nightly and he and his partner Clarus, live in Toronto and know a lot of the character actors hired for The Expanse. They knew the actor playing Jacob as well as some of the others throughout the series so that was fun BTS info. Another little fun fact: the actor playing the RCE security guard Mason (seen in an earlier episode talking about "sides" and "corn") did such a good job that they had him play the scene in this Episode where he says "no one is supposed to talk to" the scientist and Amos just grabs his gun and tosses it aside and then says "is there something we still have to do?" Hilarious little scene and the actor plays it so well!

I was listening to an interview with the authors/writers and Naren Shankar, the showrunner(who got his start in Star Trek:TNG), about a word bubble survey they did for The Expanse after S1 aired. The survey was "What is The Expanse most similar to?" or something like that. The survey would take everyones answers and aggregate them to a word bubble map, with the most common answers being the biggest words and least common the smallest. In the bubble, there were a few answers that had some size, Game of Thrones, Babylon 5, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, etc. But the most common answer by far and the biggest word on the map by a lot was "Nothing". Meaning that most people agreed that there really is nothing like The Expanse. The Expanse is number one for me. After a few rewatches it edged out Lord of the Rings. The attention to detail is just next level in The Expanse. As for why it's not more popular, it's really just not a show for the masses. It kicks basically all tropes, stereotypes, and pacing out of the window and just does its own thing. I love it, but I also see why a lot of people just can't get into it. The show also had basically zero marketing, so it's all word of mouth.

Warp Reactor

That is an excellent point. Not once do I ever remember seeing ANY type of advertisement for The Expanse.

I stumbled on it when it first came to Prime and even I forgot about it for awhile as they got it back on track. A friend of mine asked if I'd seen it and that reminded me. It seems the more I watch it, and especially with reactors and their great insights and love like Greg here, the more I fall in love with it. I think it was the commitment to needing people to pay close attention because they weren't going to keep reminding us of the plot points they'd already made that played a role. Some things if you blink and miss it you've missed it for good until the next rewatch! Some things are not understood fully until way after the fact. This is what makes it so supremely re-watchable, though!

Ty Franck has described the scenes between Amos and Wei in this episode leading up to the final one as being two people who are talking past each other. One says something and the other hears it differently. When he says "I'll never lie to you" she hears; "I love you" but he's really saying "when I tell you I'm going to kill you, I mean it. Take me seriously". In the final scene he already knows it's going to happen and he's actually pleading for her life, but she fundamentally misunderstands Amos; as most of us did in the first few episodes, before we got to know him. WE know Amos will kill her and we can see the real danger she's in because she hasn't had the opportunity to know him like we do.

I first heard of it via word of mouth as well when SyFy was airing S2 I think. Someone online was asking someone else what the current best scifi was and when someone said The Expanse I had gotten curious because I hadn't heard of it before and went to go look it up. Started watching through S2 and then rewatched it before S3 came out. Then rewatched it again between every season. Then rewatched it again along with multiple reactors. And now here we are, watching it along with the best reactor this show has ever seen by far. Greg has done more to justify this show and its legacy than anyone short of the people who actually made it and I'm happy to be here for all of it.

Re building new languages, as they have the Belter Creole, in the books almost all the dialogue between the Belters is in their dialect.
