Remember that this aired about the same time Hogan's Heroes was on TV. People were NOT as sensitive and reactive to references to things they disliked back then. Watching a story about Nazis wasn't taken as "problematic" or "cultural appropriation." It was a simpler and better time for storytelling and artistic expression.

At the time, I was too young to fully understand politics and its effects. I had no idea how it was received. In our family it was just an entertaining story, nothing more (at least to a young viewer like me).

When I first saw this, I was at first shocked to see that a member of the Federation would steer a world down such a path. While John Gill might have had hope to be able to utilized some of the more positive aspects to help Ekos, we're reminded that no matter what was intended the xenophobic outlook of the higher echelon, or in this case Melakon, fell into the darker path of fascism that John Gill had introduced perhaps not knowing the beast of Nazism except as a academic ideal based on a perceived benefits of its government prior to the starting of WW II. I was fascinated to see how the story writers brought a nightmare into a war between worlds. In the end, this episode highlights the wisdom of the Prime Directive. I have to say, this is one of the "Prime Directive" episodes of this season, that I was looking forward to see your more modern take on it.

Overall, from the point of view of my family who watched this episode with me. As far as I could tell from any quick discussion on this episode, we viewed this episode as a story of SCI-FI. The Allies had fought and brought down the Axis powers and now people were building toward to be a bright future. This episode provided a look back at the evil that had been checked by the combined forces of the US, Europe and the absolutely brave members of the local resistance. It was during this point people viewed the resurgence of Fascism as being almost impossible.
