I actually like this episode better than the first, primarily because its structure for its story felt flushed out in the 50 or so minute time frame. While I thought the pilot (which to me had some really excellent scenes), felt rushed. Not surprising with a pilot. And you hit the nail on the head SNW for its successes and misses, benefits mightily due to being able to develop its characters. And for that development to continue.

The only issue I have is that they don't clue us into the plan at the end, so it ends up being really confusing what Spock is attempting, leading to a need to extrapolate, which then makes the tension I think they're trying to force become diffused by confusion. They could have spent a little less time on the combat between the two ships to give us a 1 or 2 minute "ready room" scene where Spock sketches the general idea of his plan, then we could concentrate on *if* it would work instead of*what* he was doing. I feel like this is a holdover from the Discovery style of writing, where the action and emotion is the focus, rather than the problem solving. Some people enjoy that style; I do not. thankfully the writers on SNW largely move away from this kind of "reverse engineered" drama that relies upon keeping the audience in the dark until the "reveal" and start focusing on what I've always loved most about classic trek; cooperation and communication to decide plans to deal with complex problems; as well as difficult moral questions tackled by a crew with diverse viewpoints and ideals.
