"Where Are The Female Producers?" project notes: (Patreon)
Content
For months I've been in pre-production for a video similar to the Spotify or Behringer vids, but regarding gender in the music production world. Weirdly, some of the things I initially focused on, such as the name "Gearslutz" potentially being a welcome mat for unwelcoming behavior, are actually now in the process of being tackled and changed.
Another time-eater has been interviews. The fact is that I don't know wtf I'm talking about on this subject because I haven't experienced any form of it. So what better thing to do during a pandemic than have a bunch of email discussions and Zoom calls with female producers ranging from music students who have yet to grasp DAWs all the way to Imogen Heap.
Now I'm onto my favorite part. The actual science. I've been gifted/cursed (depending on how tired I am) with a library of research in addition to my own polls and surveys. I also have a cognitive neurologist helping explain how male and female brains/neural hormonal interactions differ, and if that could possibly have anything to do with the disparity of females vs. males in music production. In addition to this, plenty of more interviews with folks across the spectrum who have researched this for decades.
Now it's wrap-up time, because I feel like I'm getting lost in a rabbit hole that will simply stray away from or delay making a YouTube video that can deliver unbiased information on this topic. So if you don't see a review video next week, it's because the grind is focused on this one.
Finally: This video, in its current form, would ABSOLUTELY NOT be possible without this Patreon. Research papers, academic books, and consultants are expensive, and there's no way I'd be able to approach a topic this sensitive with this much confidence or rigor without your help. This is literally your money at work. Thank you!
