So, while a manga reader, I'll post some stuff I thought at the time, and stuff I noticed here related to what you were saying, so there's absolutely no spoilers: 1) Snake girl with the Sword Bastard has non-standard/non-human eyes, but obvious is, since she has a contract with a Devil, which can only occur between a Devil and Human, meaning she's not a Fiend or a Devil. Similarly, Denji had sharp, pointy teeth before he became like he is. This suggests that nonhuman features are either natural somehow(descendants of Fiends who reproduced?) or can be the result of a contract. 2) More then just not having a bullet hold to the head, she's lacking bullet holes in her clothes. And she went from being in the seats right beside the blonde guy, to standing several seats away from him with no one noticing before that, despite two guys looking in that direction right before. This makes me think "illusions" personally. The fact that the guy accused Makima of knowing this is coming only reinforces that: if you suspect you're going to get targeted, wouldn't you create a decoy, while you're somewhere else in disguise?

2023-01-19 19:46:56 A bit smaller tl;dr this week. (I hope that you're doing well with all the goings ons lately). Makima. One of the things you mentioned Chainsaw Man does so well is that it portrays its characters as human. Kobeni loses her chill against the Eternity Devil because her skillset is useless in that scenario. Then when we see here being a badass here, we STILL see her hyperventilating and freaking out once that adrenaline rush passes just like anybody else… except Makima. Makima is uncannily composed whenever we see her, no matter the situation. Even standing up having just been shot through the head and facing down the 4 armed gunmen who just killed her, she never seems disrupted at all. Paired with the display at the temple and the implication that she'd anticipated some of what happened, it's straight up terrifying — but those big moments also always eclipse tiny details about her. The last thing she said before she gets shot is, "I hate meeting with the Kyoto bigwigs. They're so intimidating. A meal is better when you get to relax. Last night's drinks were so good." and she's on the verge of being melancholic. Compare that to the first thing she says upon exiting the train which is, "The luncheon is cancelled." where she's clearly pleased about that despite the carnage left behind and what that implies on a larger scale. So then, if you roll back to the night of the drinks as well as the chat Kobeni & Aki had beforehand when they wanted to get her drunk. Not only did Makima used to travel all the time, but now she's staying in Tokyo all the time. They know it's SOMETHING about Denji but not what. Then, we see that Makima goes to buy Denji anti-nausea meds and comforts him, and she asks where Denji went when Himeno drunkenly absconds with him. This whole episode is her taking prisoners and using them to smash people at a distance because that's more effective than her travelling back to Tokyo immediately. Then when she arrives back in Tokyo, her comment that the other two aren't joining her permanently is just, "The food here is to die for." because she finds it relaxing being back where Denji is. Even the episode that revealed the Gun Devil does the same things in showing Makima operates differently, because when she's teaching Denji about intimacy, she straight up says that it's difficult for her to tell what other people are feeling emotionally — which matches how emotionally withdrawn she is in the way she acts. She's straight up just teaching Denji how to flirt with HER. We don't know WHY the Gun Devil wants Denji's heart, but we know Makima wants it more. While there are the omnipresent terrifying undertones given her position of authority and also the terrifying power she put on display here smashing dudes from another city — that makes the fact that she promised Denji literally ANYTHING he wanted of he killed the Gun Devil even more significant. She can probably do literally whatever Denji wants. Which takes things back to the first episode. Makima walks in to a warehouse where Denji is made of chainsaws and standing surrounded by a pool of bodies of dudes he's just sliced to pieces. Like he says this episode, "I love bad guys, y'know… Nobody gives me any shit when I carve 'em up!" and he's in the peak of the come down from his crazy element — and what happens? He sees her and just says, "Hug me." and Makima straight up sprints over and wraps her arms tight around him without hesitation and then talks about how good he smells. It's not clear why or what other ulterior motives are at play but everything so far reinforces that Makima straight up WANTS him, and doesn't want anybody else getting their hands on him. While Denji's desire for her is obviously telegraphed all the time, Makima's desire is extremely subtle and always gets overshadowed by big picture stuff coming into play. Those details make her true motives feel even less clear and more unsettling in a way that just amplifies everything else we got to see from her this episode. The subtle details, execution, shots, and performances in this show are SO good. Glad you're still having a blast with this series!!
