Gyro did become a Chimera Ant, but he's neither Welfin, Ikalgo or Meruem (The King). He basically escaped without anyone noticing around the same time Pitou was born (he actually was in the Town where Gon and Killua met Knuckle and Shoot). In short.... in the Manga Gyro was set up to be a future antagonist. Also... the reason Welfin's Black Centipedes disappeared it's because he decided to be completely honest with Ikalgo about what he's feeling, his Nen abilities were created based on his tendency to not trust others and himself... so by telling the truth to another and to himself he found a way to deactivate his Power.

God why did the anime just take out the part in the manga where they explain what happened to Gyro. It just makes everything more difficult.
