With all the feigned accents, those subtitles would have been helpful. I understood about half of what was said.

Thank you so much for reacting to this film. I first watched it about 5 months ago, and so it's still relatively fresh in my mind. I knew the scene with his mom being hung was going to break you. It packs such a wallop, and we never have to see more than her feet... Incidentally, if you like movies showing war from a child's perspective, I would highly recommend John Boorman's Hope and Glory, and Steven Spielberg's Empire of The Sun both films from 1987
