I totally forgot this movie. The effects were decent, some good jokes and pop culture references. I just think they tried too hard to appeal to the "Toy Story" audience without injecting the same level of heart. Also, the level of physical danger was out of proportion to the story. Good to start a new year with you, mate. I wonder if we'll ever see you nod off, now that you're more comfortable, haha!

Also, the Small Soldiers that were supposed to draw us into the theater turned out to be the BAD guys, and not very sympathetic ones, and the good ones we were supposed to sympathize with were...a little too weird and unappealing. And that's leaving aside the creep factor at the time, with Phil Hartman having just been shot in an ugly marital dispute, and that it took us the entire 90's to realize that nobody liked Dennis Leary. Basically, like "Explorers", "Innerspace" and "Matinee", you think Joe Dante films are going to be a lot more entertaining on the way in, from the idea, than they are on the way out from the execution. At least his sloppy-goofy everything-into-the-self-amusing-pot style helped Gremlins II.

Man this movie! I remember watching it as a kid and I was absolutely terrified during the big fight scene - kept having to hide behind the sofa! And when Kirsten Dunst got tied up by her dolls! Jeez! I was side eyeing my barbies for weeks after watching this movie! Hahaha!
