From HP we know that Grindelwald was defeated by Dumbledore in a fight and he was then sent to Azkaban for the rest of his life. That's why Voldemort visited him there when he was searching for the elder wand. And yes he was the boy who jumped out of the window in Harrys dream. (So, fantastic beasts happen before the first wizarding war in the 20s) I think i can tell you that.. Its no spoiler... : ) And you should really refresh your HP knowledge before watching the second movie. Locking forward!

I don't know if you've seen the movie "Big" yet, but there's a scene where Tom Hanks is at a toy-company meeting, looking at one exec's marketing-driven pitch for a nonsensically dull toy and saying "I don't get it...What child would LIKE this?" That’s my feeling watching the Fantastic Beasts series: Warner was so happy they got JK Rowling to write more new stuff personally, they didn't care if it was a fan-orgy for amateur screenwriter JK to stuff her core fans with more pointless backstory and gay-persecution metaphor, but it’s NOT HARRY…There’s no one to care about. That’s why it attracts adults who want to cross-reference every book detail, and college fangirls who want to see Johnny Depp play Grundewald, but who would want to go to a fantasy set in a bunch of grimy 30’s NYC office buildings, with an antisocial Doctor Who and his magic suitcase? (And every time someone says that, the abovementioned fangirls defend it with “Well, that’s because this isn’t for kids, it’s all complex now!”)
