As you may have noticed, Indy's a bit more jaded and self-interested in this movie... and his love interest is more of a shallow, pampered showbiz type. The reasoning will become a bit more apparent in the prologue of "Last Crusade." Again, the full flow of his character arc would be a little more apparent if you'd started with this one, but what's done is done.

Story has it that both Spielberg and Lucas were going through bad divorces at the time of filming…Nnnno kidding. ;) I don’t put “story arc reasoning” down to the characterization of Willie, so much as the script being written by the directors of "Howard the Duck"—The one movie that finally convinced George Lucas that his old “American Graffiti” writers shouldn’t be allowed to do everything. (I remember the old Lego Indiana Jones videogame, where every character has a useful skill like a gun, shovel, rope, etc. What was Willie’s useful skill?: “Willie's voice can break glass--Press square button to scream!")

Many years have passed since my last viewing of this, and watching it with you makes me realize that time was not kind to it. Some of the effects and stunts seem so cheesy now, But then, it's only intended to be a fun, action-filled romp. And you're right, it has its heart in the right place. I think NO. 3 gets the original mojo back. We'll see if you agree.

I'd probably be able to appreciate this movie more if "Last Crusade" hadn't brought back so many elements from "Lost Ark" and was more of its own thing like the others.
