Simple's scripting language is great for creating tons of dynamic, interactive gameplay. But what about parts of the game that benefit from visual layout, like the static starmap from UQM1? We walk through how a designer (or modder!) can use Tiled to lay out the starmap and how that becomes part of the real game.

I forgot to mention it in the video, but this is also an example of data useful to both the simulation and the view, since the viewer may want to represent something like the starmap in the user interface. Though the planet names and colors of stars are not relevant to the simulation, the view can inspect that same data when showing a player-facing starmap!

Starmap Layout Demo - July 15, 2022

A walkthrough of how we use a design tool outside of Simple to lay out and ingest the starmap for UQM2, using UQM1's starmap as a model. Support us on Patreon at https://patreon.com/pistolshrimp Join our Discord at https://discord.gg/rasVCDmYKp
