The BTS for this revealed a lot of whoppers. According to the showrunners, Daemon pursued Rhaenyra purely to get back at his brother, it was intended to be seen as abusive, and he lost interest once he realized she was into it. They also said that Rhaenyra seduced Cole because he was the only guy around. Rhaenyra is more sympathetic than Daemon due to her age and inexperience, but it really paints a picture of two deeply selfish and entitled people. Rhaenyra’s a great character, but when you compare how she handles her duties (such as the beginning at Storm’s End) to other women we’ve seen who are even younger than her—Alysanne, Sansa, Margaery, Daenerys and, of course, Alicent—she’s unimpressive. And I think Alicent’s frustration with her is based in part on Rhaenyra’s refusal to show the dignity expected of her position, which Alicent herself is committed to upholding. Speaking of Alicent, her laying motionless and dead-eyed while getting a plowed by Viserys was the most disturbing part of the episode for me. Was it supposed to be seen as an assault? But again, this was a horror of the show’s own making. They chose to add the huge age gap and make the marriage much more exploitative than it was in the books. It’s like they wanted to make some big profound statement about injustice so badly that they ended up adding to it.

Yeah they're not exactly being subtle with their sex & gender themes. And I agree that Rhaenyra is a very unimpressive politician -- she says the smallfolks' opinions don't matter, she's standoffish to lords, she sides with the goddamn bullying Bracken instead of the Blackwood kid.. And I think Rhaenyra's poor politicking is the result of Viserys' failure to teach her. I hope that as the story progresses, Rhaenyra will learn to be better.

One big difference between GOT and HOTD is that whereas GOT often felt like it was deliberately trying to be shocking and make headlines, HOTD feels like it’s trying to create something artistic and profound. And sometimes it works and other times it comes across as kind of clumsy and self-serious.
