I think a book you would like is The Golden Bough by James Frazer if you haven't read it already. From wikipedia: "Frazer proposed that mankind progresses from magic through religious belief to scientific thought."

That SSM was in 2003, and GRRM's plans have changed over the last 17 years... But yeah I think a Daenerys v Young Griff conflict will happen -- in Arianne I, TWOW, Teora dreams of dancing dragons, "And everywhere the dragons danced the people died"
