Another 4K LaserDisc rip, this time of the Sega Taiken Special disc that featured Galaxy Force front-and-center. It also included the same Out Run material that I have on something like three other VHS tapes. Recycling was big business in the ’80s, I guess.

Once again, this is another case of me doing something (posting an LD rip in 4K) just because I can. But I'm going to get a ton of mileage out of this material for future Segaiden videos, so having access to the source means that any time you spot this content cut into an episode, you can do the Leo Dicaprio pointing meme in real life.

Look forward to NES Works Gaiden Casio episode #1 next weekend!

Sega Taiken Special [4K LaserDisc Rip]

A digital rip of another archival Sega LaserDisc gameplay collection. This volume includes Galaxy Force, Out Run, and Thunder Blade. It also ends with a live performance of a Sega medley by the SST Band, which rules. But they really got a lot of mileage out of that same Out Run footage, huh? Ripped from a Pioneer 959 LaserDisc player via S-video and upscaled to 4K via RetroTink 4K. Does this footage necessarily need to be presented at 4K? No. But I did it anyway.

The video quality is great here, fantastic transfer, but what always gets me when I go back to LaserDisc is just how good the sound quality is, and I'm convinced this is because the standards for sound recording in general were absurdly high in Japan back then. A lot of VHS tapes also have phenomenal sound, and then you get to LD and they have an incredible clarity. Hearing these Sega game sounds in this high quality is fantastic.
