The Super Cassette Vision returns at last after the Gakken hiatus. I don't love either of these ports, but after the TV Boy's agony, they both feel like an absolute oasis in the desert. Hopefully you will agree that, if nothing else, at least it's nice to have some vibrant RGB video output.

Stars and gripes: Boulder Dash & Miner 2049er | NES Works Gaiden: Epoch-11

Epoch finally, finally gives us a pair of games that they bothered to license rather than just blatantly rip off. Interestingly, both hail from the U.S. computer scene, suggesting that Epoch was perhaps trying to rip off Hudson here by duplicating their success with American import Lode Runner. It didn't exactly pan out, as Miner 2049er and Boulder Dash for Super Cassette Vision failed to move the needle in any way whatsoever. The ports themselves vary wildly in quality, with Boulder Dash being fairly obnxious and Miner 2049er playing pretty well. Of course, they both collapse in the face of the ultimate Super Cassette Vision challenge: The joystick. Production notes: Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Super Cassette Vision footage recorded from original hardware via legacy RGB cable. NES/Famicom footage captured from @analogueinc Nt Mini; SG-1000 footage recorded from Analogue Mega Sg Video upscaled to 720 with Micomsoft's xRGB Mini Framemeister; arcade footage captured from MiSTer when possible, with thanks to @MiSTerAddons.

"The Gakken TV Boy was, what, a VIC-20 but worse?" The dozens of VIC-20 fans in the audience will be furious! I really liked the overview of how Western games used to be beloved in Japan before things started to get out of hand (though even back then, Atari games were famous for poor localizations...) Also, thanks for introducing us to Hen! They actually play a whole lot of Famicom also-rans; check out their Hustle Chumy run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISBbTQ8nK38
