Well, look at that. Another bonus. It's almost like a regular feature of this channel, or something.

I thought you might enjoy a little break from the video magazines for some pure, simple video game stuff. This time, is the Konami Best Selection LaserDisc, which features superplay footage of Thunder Cross, Haunted Castle, and Super Contra (plus a little Konami arcade retrospective!). The Haunted Castle footage is especially interesting to me, because I've never been able to reach the end of that game—I made it to the final bridge once, but that sequence is a load of unfair horse manure. Even the superplay DVD that came with the Oritachi Game Center Haunted Castle release for PS2 gave up at the bridge! But apparently there is an end to the game, if you can manage to walk on thin air pixel-perfectly.

As usual, this is upscaled to 720p via RetroTink 5X. You can tell by the distinctive screen tearing toward the top... the RetroTink really doesn't like Elgato capture devices.

Konami Best Selection [1987] 720p LaserDisc rip

An upscaled digital transfer of an official Konami-licensed LaserDisc published by Pony Canyon in 1987. This LD features "super play" videos of Thunder Cross and Haunted Castle (aka Castlevania, aka Akumajou Dracula) on Side 1, and Super Contra and a brief Konami arcade retrospective on Side 2. For those who care about the tech stuff, this was scaled from 480i to 720p via Retrotink 5X through S-video from a Pioneer CLD-959. For those who do not, please enjoy seeing what the final battle of Haunted Castle actually looks like.

The vintage computer graphics at the head of this disc are...pretty cool actually?

A SuperPlay of Haunted Castle? I didn’t think it was even possible to beat that game.
