One last li'l extra for the month of August—another Famimaga Video. So much high-quality B-roll of games I will now be able to reference in my videos without actually having to play them! It's very exciting for me, a creator.

I regret that there's nothing super awesome or unique this episode, and a third of the run time is dominated by Famista ’88 and another big Final Fantasy II piece while Mega Man 2 barely gets a mention. Typical media bias by corrupt lackeys deep in the pocket of Big Baseball & RPG, am I right?

Famimaga Video 1989-01 [Issue 3] VHS Rip

A video rip of the third issue of Family Magazine's video companion series, which ran for a couple of years during the peak Bubble Economy days. You can sense the winds of change blowing in this episode—after a blowout on the two big games for the issue (Famista ’88 and Final Fantasy II once again), Mega Drive and PC Engine hit front-and-center before the standard Famicom coverage arrives. Nothing mind-blowing this time around, though it's always fun to catch a glimpse of the uniquely ragged Famicom conversion of Maniac Mansion without actually having to play it. And it seems kind of scandalous for the freshly released Mega Man 2 to get a meager little passing mention that buries the lede. Where are the giant bosses and cool Robot Masters!? Recorded from a JVC Super VHS video deck and upscaled to 720p via Retrotink 5X. Note that this upload includes a couple of brief skips/gaps due to the age and condition of the video tape, which lost sync in two spots—nothing essential, though. You may freely use portions of this video for your own work as needed! All I ask for my efforts in getting this material online is a small source credit in your video or footnotes. 0:38 CONTENTS 1:16 Famista ’88 6:33 Final Fantasy II 12:23 Gradius II 15:00 MEGA DRIVE FAN 15:05 Space Harrier II 16:00 Super Thunder Blade 17:04 Altered Beast 18:05 Super Mario Bros. 3 animation 18:36 PC ENGINE FAN 18:46 Fighting Street 19:27 No-Ri-Ko 20:12 Son Son 20:49 Dungeon Explorer PC ENGINE ULTRA TECHNIQUE 21:34 Gaia Master 22:27 Fantasy Zone 22:50 Keith Courage 23:05 Power League 23:13 BOKUTACHI GAME CENTER 23:34 Ghouls ’N Ghosts 26:25 EYECATCH 26:33 Super Mario Bros. 3 32:04 ULTRA TECHNIQUE 32:16: Big Challenge! I also imagine the coverage was different because Final Fantasy II was a sequel to a very successful game and Mega Man 2....well, wasn't. Funny how I ponder that FF2 could have killed the franchise in another timeline (especially if it came out in the west) while MM2 did the exact opposite.

The debut of the PC Engine CD-ROM Rom is historic though. Gaming of the early 1990s gets its slow start there.
