Good afternoon, friends! Or whatever time of day it may be for you. I have your first patron-exclusive video for August here—another VHS rip. This one is a treasure trove of material for my work, the first in a series of 45-minute video magazines that Family Computer Magazine (Famimaga) released bimonthly as a counterpart to its print publications for a couple of years during the bubbliest part of the Bubble Era. These things were super cheap by the standards of Japanese VHS tapes, selling for a mere ¥1980 (about $25 at the time, unless I'm messing up my math) versus the ¥6000-¥9000 of standard Bubble Era tapes. And they're loaded with previews for a huge variety of games as well as official trailers and other interesting things. You can see the full index with timestamps on the YT video description! I've managed to get my hands on the full Famimaga Video set, so you can look forward to all kinds of interesting things in the months ahead. As I type this, I'm digitizing an issue that includes previews of Castlevania III and an interview with Yuji Horii about Dragon Quest IV....

Famimaga Video 1988-09 [Issue 1] VHS Rip

A video rip of the first issue of Family Magazine's video companion series, which ran for a couple of years during the peak Bubble Economy days. A ton of interesting previews and trailers here, including a brief but cool look inside Squaresoft's dev offices in anticipation of Final Fantasy II. This September 1988 issue leads with Super Mario Bros. 3, which would launch in Japan the following month and was obviously kind of a big deal! This issue is almost entirely focused on Famicom/NES games, though PC Engine and Mega Drive make their presence known briefly. Recorded from a JVC video deck and upscaled to 720p via Retrotink 5X. --------------------- TIMESTAMPS OF CONTENTS: 0:20 TITLES & TOC 1:28 Super Mario Bros. 3 preview 3:04 Final Lap preview 5:32 Space Harrier preview 6:29 Famicom Tantei Club trailer 6:58 DragonBall Daimaou Fukkatsu trailer 7:12 Tatakae Ramenman: Sakuretsu Choujin trailer 7:28 FAMICOM BASEBALL SPECIAL 7:46 Kyuukyoko Harihiri Stadium 9:24 Bases Loaded 2: Second Season 11:15 R.B.I. I would have worn out an English version of this as a 7-year-old waiting for Mario 3. “Surprisingly, you can use turtle shells as a weapon, and take a leaf to become Tail Mario, a very mischievous character” (YT auto-translated). Excellent work Jeremy
