I, uh, ended up grabbing a LOT of official video game-related VHS tapes from recent auctions. A lot. Some of these have already been posted on YouTube, including this one, but I've ripped them quite cleanly and upscaled them via Framemeister, so these new versions look pretty great (in my opinion). Anyway, I have so many tapes that I need to publish them more than once per month or else it'll take years to get them all posted.

So, this month's second video is Namco Gal's Island, a 1990 tape that highlights Namco arcade games to feature female characters in a prominent role. Or at that's the idea, anyway. Wonder Momo and Legend of Valkyrie, I can see for sure. Ladies front and center at the lead. Phelios and Bravoman, though? Questionable! But hey, it's a showcase for women in games and manages to be minimal creepy despite it vintage, so let's call it a win.

Namco Gal's Island: Official VHS Tape [1990, Pony Canyon]

An extremely energetic promotional video showcasing late ’80s Namco arcade games with prominent female roles, although some of these selections seem like a bit of a stretch. Captured from VHS and upscaled to 720p. Featured games: The Return of Ishtar Wonder Momo Dragon Spirit Bravoman Marchen Maze Ordyne Phelios Legend of Valkyrie

I'm so fascinated by the culture that created these tapes. This must have been a group, right? I can't imagine it was just one person doing this as a hobby. I wonder what the people who made this are up to now, if they were young enough to still be around 33 years later. How do they feel about these kinds of videos still being around on YouTube, or about live performances on GDQ each year bringing in more and more money for charity each year? (I mean, hopefully they're happy about it...)

So glad you’re doing this, Jeremy — thank you. Do you think you’ll ever encounter rights issues with them being hosted on YouTube? I’d doubt it because they’re old end esoteric tapes, but not sure what the whims of YouTube would bring.

I've gotten a couple of copyright notices, but no strikes. If anything bad happens, I'll just put these on Archive.org instead.
