This month's patron exclusive episode brings us Sept. 1984's Super Cassette Vision releases, a pair of highly derivative titles... which, you know, is about what you'd expect from Epoch. Originality: Highly overrated! Or not. I wouldn't call either of these games all-timers, to be honest. Maybe a little originality is what the doctor ordered? We'll see some of that next time, with a couple of really solid releases for Super Cassette Vision. For now, though, please enjoy a couple of little-known games that will remind you of much better-known—and better—creations.

A fairly decent descent: Punch Boy & Elevator Fight | NES Works Gaiden: Epoch-08

This episode takes us beyond the Super Cassette Vision launch window—and beyond the original Cassette Vision's final release, which arrived a month before this pair of games. That information has some relevance to at least one of these games, which shares a similar theme (elevators!) to Cassette Vision's swan song. Really, both of these games draw on ideas and mechanics that Epoch's designers had explored on the original Cassette Vision, though with considerably more graphical nuance and variety. I'd say both of these titles feel quite of-the-moment to their 1984 contemporaries on other consoles... which makes it a shame that they're both bogged down by such a dated, hardwired controller. Production notes: Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Super Cassette Vision footage recorded from original hardware via Epoch OEM RGB SCART cable. NES/Famicom footage captured from Analogue Nt Mini. SG-1000 footage recorded from Analogue Mega Sg. Arcade footage captured from MiSTer when possible, with thanks to MiSTerAddons. Video upscaled to 720 with Micomsoft's xRGB Mini Framemeister. I saw you had Lupin the third running in the background on the PVM at the start of the video. Sadly, I don't find it any better of an overall game than Punch Boy and Elevator Fight. But at least you have the license of a popular franchise to add to the appeal there.

I know these are eventually going to be released for free. Is the plan to release these as opposed to normal Works videos for a few months giving you a much deserved break? I ask because I would rather just wait to watch until they show up on Youtube if this is the case. Thanks!
