Well! This is more like it.

Gangster Town may stack its odds unfairly against a single player, but maybe that's OK—it seems like the kind of game you'd want to share with a friend (in cooperative mode, you see?). Rather than being some bog-standard arcade interpretation that simply puts the Master System on equal light gun footing with Nintendo's NES, Gangster Town plays like nothing else before it. I mean, the first proper stage consists of a car chase. That's some Lucky & Wild shenanigans on an 8-bit system. Unbelievable. And, yet, here we are.

I have fewer kind words for Great Volleyball. Actually, looking more closely, that tally actually appears to be no kind words. Alors!

Tommy Gun fun in the sun: Gangster Town & Great Volleyball | Segaiden #046

The Light Phaser finally proves itself an invaluable companion to the Master System instead of simply a tool for maintaining parity with Nintendo's lineup thanks to Gangster Town, the most inventive light gun shooter we've seen so far on an 8-bit system. With a fun theme, imaginative scenarios, and tons of bonus details and mechanics, it sets a new standard for the genre. It's also unreasonably difficult unless you play in two-player mode, but, hey. That's Sega for you. There's also a volleyball game this week. I guess. Production notes: Why watch when you can read? This series gives me such joy.

Gangster Town is one of the best light gun shooters of the 8-bit era. It helps to have cheats available on MiSTer.

Yo. Hang on. There are cheats on the MiSTer core? Why have I not seen those in my extensive journey through the menus to get SNAC stuff set up??
