This episode is, in a sense, the epitome of what I've been hoping to accomplish by putting together Segaiden and NES Works Gaiden videos in parallel: A chance to compare and contrast the SG-1000 and Famicom, and to see how similar (or identical) material fares on each respective platform. Despite what you might assume, it doesn't always work out in Nintendo's favor, as this episode demonstrates.

Formation Z / Soccer / Championship Lode Runner / Space Invaders retrospective: NES Works Gaiden #29

It feels like Famicom is kind of playing catch-up with SG-1000 this episode, as every game appearing here arrived on shelves in the wake of a Sega-published equivalent—either the exact same game (as in Space Invaders), one exploring the same root concept in different ways (Soccer), or a game with almost suspicious conceptual and mechanical similarities (Formation Z). Of course, the Nintendo version of these games absolutely eclipsed Sega's, right? Well... maybe not always. Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Production notes: NES and Famicom footage in this episode was captured from an @Analogue Nt Mini via RGB out. Arcade footage (when possible) was captured from MiSTer (special thanks: @MiSTer Addons). Standard definition video upscaled to 720 with xRGB Mini Framemeister and @Retro Tink 5X.

I checked those this morning. I assume it’s probably a Patreon bug, but I figured you’d want to know about it since it’s affecting multiple users on your channel for some reason. Unfortunately there’s probably nothing you or I can do to fix it. I sent Patreon a support an email and see what they say. Thanks for keeping a consistent schedule so I know when to check here even when I don’t get email notifications!

I'm not getting Jeremy's e-mails, but I am getting them from other people I support. Very odd. Like you said tho, every Wednesday!

Shame to see that Space Invaders didn't pan out on the Famicom, seeing as how the system was so good at capturing the feel of classic arcade games. (I think the NES Classic Edition on its own has plenty of good examples to back that up.)
