As promised (?), my actual video publishing schedule has shifted very slightly from the Q4 preview I posted a few weeks back. Although the content hasn't changed, the order has... in this case, I realized we could use a (1) Game Boy episode and (2) something a little lighter and quippier amidst all the more straightforward historic coverage that's been showing up here lately. Which isn't to say this isn't a legit episode or anything, but the games under examination here are awfully simplistic, so there was a little more room to poke around at the edges of the topic.

Power Racer & Painter Momopie retrospective: Pac-pals | Game Boy Works #121

A pair of games that share more in common than they might appear to at first glance. Power Racer traces its history back more than a decade: It's a portable conversion of an arcade dot-gobbler that predates Pac-Man by a year. That might not seem to have much to do with the Japan-only Painter Momopie, a game about a witch with a paint roller, but ultimately both these Game Boy releases belong to the same genre and do a great job of demonstrating the difference a decade made in how a specific type of game concept could be interpreted. These aren't the most beloved or best-known games on the system, but they're worth a look regardless. Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! And be sure to check out the Retronauts podcast (http://www.retronauts.com), where I (and many others!) tackle a much wider array of classic gaming topics each week.

Even stranger is that one of the first third party games for the Mark III was a Japan-only arcade port of Rygar by a publisher that may or may not have been Tecmo using a front company like with Konami and Ultra Games. But yeah, SEGA games on Game Boy at the same time in Japan as the Game Gear is unusual. Momopie looks like quality stuff (also decided to up my tier from $2 to $6 today. )

That tease at the end for SaGa 2 has me all kinds of excited! I recently played it for the first time (after playing Makai Toushi SaGa for the first time, as well) and was really surprised at just how good it is. As a long time watcher and reader of your work, Jeremy, I figured it was time to sign up here as well! I look forward to all the future content.
