I wasn't planning to put together a new NES Works episode for quite a while, but the next Game Boy Works covers a Double Dragon game that is actually a Kunio game. And given that Renegade—the Kunio game that inspired the original Double Dragon—is next on the NES agenda, it only made sense to dip a toe briefly into the NES pool. And this episode reminded me why NES Works is so fun to put together! Even for a short game like this, there's so much history around the platform. The run time on this episode is actually lengthier than a longplay of the game.

That said, I don't intend to take a serious look at NES 1988 until the third NES Works book is out... and before I get there, I need to finish the Virtual Boy Works book (about 70% complete, aiming to have it wrapped next month), Super NES Works 1991 (about 40% complete, and will be ready to post digitally to backers here by September), and maybe N64 Works 1996 (0% complete, see ya next year).

On top of that, I have a brand new Works project brewing... something I've dearly wanted to tackle from the beginning, and that could cause a distraction. So many ambitions, so few hours in the week....

Renegade retrospective: Shoulder-tossed in translation | NES Works #071

The NES's 1988 lineup begins with the debut of a gaming legacy. Renegade gave us both the River City/Kunio franchise AND the Double Dragon franchise, and given what lies ahead in the near future for both NES and Game Boy, we definitely need to have a look into the origins of these brawly species. Video Works is funded through Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! And be sure to check out the Retronauts podcast (http://www.retronauts.com), where I (and many others!) tackle a much wider array of classic gaming topics each week.

Yo, that US cultural commentary around the 3:30 mark. Not sure if I should laugh or despair.
