Hi everyone, this morning I received an attempt at email extortion relating to the recent Patreon database leak. As patrons, this is not something you should need to worry about, as you won't have tendered critical information to Patreon like your social security number and tax documentation—only creators have to do that. Still, on the unlikely chance you do receive any sort of threat, blackmail, or extortion attempt relating to Patreon, please report it immediately to the FBI:

And this probably goes without saying, but don't pay blackmailers.

Use our Report a cyber scam or threat by filing a complaint with our Contact us via telephone or mail Call 1-800-CALLFBI (225-5324) for the Major Case Contact Center Call (866) 720-5721 to report fraud, waste, and abuse involving disaster relief to the National Center for Disaster Fraud or write to NCDF, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-4909.

I'm a software developer and a patreon account holder, so when the leak happened i grabbed it and checked it for any truly problematic details. the general gist of it is that it contains your email, some generic information no one cares about like your avatar and a hashed password. if you changed your password at all you are fine. there is nothing else people could of gotten from the leak

I am a mere patron of users (and I'm not in the US) so the email I just received from someone claiming to have my tax details and SSN shows how much of a scattershot approach is being taken here.
