Wow, this one was pretty painful to put together. I'm not a big fan of sports games under the best of circumstances, and neither NFL Football nor Soccer Mania are what you'd call "the best of circumstances." Thankfully with this speed bump out of the way, subsequent episodes should be much more enjoyable to produce; I don't see anything I'm particularly dreading for quite a while. In any case, apologies that I've been so slow with the Patreon GBW updates.

Game Boy World #041: NFL Football [Konami, 1990] & Soccer Mania [Kitty/Sony, 1990]

Are you ready for some football? "But which KIND of football?" you ask, trying to get me on a technicality. Ah, but I've covered my bases: This episode concerns both kinds of football, each of which saw its Game Boy debut in April 1990.

Maybe there wasn't much American football then. But I think it is played somewhat now in Japan. Probrably due to the popularity of the Manga and anime Eyeshield 21. Apparently they have high school American football clubs in Japan. Although I didn't do much research on the subject. I think they even made some Eyeshield 21 football games on PS2 in Japan. I'd like to think NFL football is at least a little more fun previous LCD handheld football games that preceded it. Like Marioland was a great handheld platformer, this is probrably leaps and bounds better than any previous handheld football attempt. Did the football game have link play? That might have made it worth trying, as human opponents are often much more fun than wonky CPU AI in these types of games.
