This one got a little gummed up by travel — I didn't get to edit it until yesterday, and I was at an airport once I did and couldn't upload (SFO is the tech capital of the earth, so naturally its airport's public wifi hasn't worked for years). Next episode will be (1) along in a more timely fashion and (2) a lot more fun!

Palamedes retrospective: An unlucky roll of the dice | Game Boy Works #101

Ah, here we go: The second set of 100 Game Boy Works episodes begins with the quintessential Game Boy experience. Yes, it's a mediocre puzzle-ish game that plays better on other platforms. Not an auspicious beginning, perhaps, but at least it's a realistic one.

I don't want to be that guy but...it looks like you missed one of the game's major mechanics. You see those dice on the bottom of the screen? Those reflect the blocks you've hit, and you can make various kinds of hands with different values, like poker. When you hit down on the D-pad, you'll basically spend the hand you have to eliminate some lines. A straight (which I think you have to build in numerical order) eliminates 5 lines, and I believe 6 of a kind eliminates 4, and 5 of a kind 3. You can also do 3 pair and 2 sets of 3 for values that I don't remember. In any case, you'll get rid of at least one line as long as you have 6 pieces. And if you're in vs. mode, you'll send that number minus one lines over to your opponent's side (i.e. if you get that straight, you'll have 5 lines eliminated, and you're opponent will have 4 lines added to their side). Knowing that at least should make vs. mode somewhat playable.

Yeah, I was wondering what the text under the CPU was about, but I couldn't find English-language instructions for the game (or even a FAQ) to explain it. Ironically, I did finally find a boxed copy of the EU release, which arrived while I was traveling over the weekend… too late to help with this.
