 In order to draw this picture, I used a drawing method called the Grizaille method.

In this method, you first shade in monotone and then apply a colormap to it.

By doing so, you can do a harmonious shading overall.

Looks great. Interestingly this is the way modern 3D renderers work. Some engines like Blender's Cycles engine can output the separate passes (layers) for the color, diffuse lighting, glossy highlights, etc., like you did in this illustration. However the lighting is not strictly monochrome, but contains the light color. If you paint in a format that supports 32 bit float color depth, you can actually paint in high dynamic range and adjust the exposure afterwards. Krita for example supports this. The downside of course is that 32 bit float color depth uses 4 times the RAM as the regular 8 bit integer color depth.
