I had this exact same debate with myself while watching the show and it’s kinda funny to see Fax and Neel have it between them now. In the end, I decided that the emotional depth of the moment is what’s most important. It’s the fact that the characters do genuinely think they are going to die and behave accordingly. I think my desire to be mad about fake-out deaths really comes from how unrealistic being miraculously saved from death would be, but this show is escapism at its core. I don’t think the death has to actually happen for it to be powerful. I think that feeling of primal hope, of reuniting with one thought to be dead, of waking up when you thought you would need to sacrifice it all, of getting another chance, is just as important to showcase as primal grief. And, although I like angst as much as Fax, I have to remind myself that not every show needs to be a tragedy to be worthwhile.
