I just recently, like in the last 6 months, got into K-pop. Been loving Blackpink, Baekhyun, Kai, Exo, and Stray kids. BTS are good, but somehow I don't like it as much as the other artists I've come across in my journey. But I respect it, and get why they're so huge. There's a lot of hip-hop, r&b and edm mixed into the "pop" of k-pop which is what I really like about it.

Larissa Waghorn

huh i don't think i got into any of the artists you mentioned lmao i do know of them however. i think apart from like bts or seventeen i'm more into the newer groups these days or female groups/solos

Oh, I wasn’t expecting this but I’m definitely excited to see you guys explore this! I’m a huge fan of BTS myself. Fyi, although it’s called k-“pop”, oftentimes they include other genres such as hip-hop, r&b, rock, alternative etc. BTS specifically dabbles in hip-hop since they have rappers. And yes, Dynamite is in English, it’s actually their first full English song as a group! They released it during the early stages of the pandemic to cheer people up. Butter is a follow-up to that! To answer some of your questions, yes, all the BTS members are Korean. Some of them are from the same city but most are from different areas of South Korea. You’ll find that in some groups, this is not the case as they have members from Japan, China, Thailand, or some of the members have mixed blood. But ultimately, they all sing in Korean. And Japanese too, actually! Some of my favourite BTS Japanese songs are Film Out, Your Eyes Tell, Crystal Snow, Lights, and Let Go. Also, if you want to get a better taste of their individual vocals, I would suggest reacting to their Tiny Desk performance or any of the MTV Unplugged performances.

Don’t worry Neel, there are threads and discussions about BTS looking and acting like anime characters 🤣

So to respond to some of the questions you had : - You were correct Fax, Jpop exist, just like CPOP exist for the Chinese pop. I think Vietnamese pop can also be called VPOP but I could be wrong since I don't really listen to it. I have listened to JPOP and CPOP a bit, when it's come to CPOP , I mostly listened songs from groups who were created throught survival show like INTO1 or NINE PERCENT (what you called Boot Camp Fax) or at least chinese artist that I know because they were part of Kpop groups like Lay (who is from EXO)/Jackson Wang (GOT7) - BTS only have Koreans members but nowadays it's common to find Kpop groups with members who are not Koreans, you get more and more groups who have Chinese or Japanese members but also you have Koreans-American members. For example, you talked about the "boot camp" Fax, it's usually called "SURVIVAL SHOW", severals groups have been created like that (not BTS). One group called IZ*ONE were formed throught a show like this, it was a survival show called PRODUCE 48 who had members of the JPOP group AKB48 and Koreans trainees (= word describing a person in training to become an idol) from differents agencies. Public would vote for selected members and the finalist would compose the TOP12 who would debut (but this season was rigged like the season called PRODUCE X101). So this group had Japanese and Koreans members but now they are disbanded because this survival show was done by MNET (a television music channel) who tend to do survival show but create only temporary groups but the members are now in differents groups or soloist. I know some members are actually in the group LE SSERAFIM who is also under HYBE ENT (you asked about HYBE, it's a Kpop agency, I will talk about it more in detail later) Others survivals show done by MNET with global trainees are GIRLS PLANET 999, Kep1er is the final group from this show, they had Chinese/Japanese and Koreans trainees. In this group, they have two Japanese members and one Chinese (during survivals shows, unfortunately you have koreans public who tend to vote for Koreans, they mostly only want 1 or 2 foreigners). This year we had BOYS PLANET, it went even more global since you had people from Vietnam, Thailand, Taipei, China, Japan, two koreans-American and a Korean-Canadian but you know like I said they tend to vote for Koreans so a lot of global trainees were eliminated quicky. I think the final group from this survival show debut next month? They are called ZB1 or ZEROBASEONE and they have 2 Chinese members and 1 Korean-Canadian member Others groups who were created with a survival show : PENTAGON, STRAY KIDS, TWICE, FROMIS9, MONSTA X, STRAY KIDS, WINNER, iKON, TREASURE, ENHYPEN, TNX, ATBO, TAN One of my favorite group called IN2IT (changed their name to SKYE recently) was also created through a survival show and they have a Malaysian member too (but they dont really make music now since they are indepent without agency and it's way harder to be able to do things like that). The group NINE.i have a member from Thailand normally too - You even have a Kpop group with only internationals members called BLACKSWAN, they had a change of members so if you check out I only recommend KARMA since it's with the new lineup only composed of the international members They have Fatou who is Senegalese (lived in Belgium), Gabi Brazilian, Nvee American and Sriya who is Indian - so HYBE ENT is BTS label, it was know as Big Hit Entertainment before. Big Hit Entertainment was a small agency, at first, they only had BTS, if you look at some videos about BTS and their Journey, you will see how they started from little to all of this. At some point BIGHIT changed the name to HYBE, now HYBE acquired several others kpop agencies as subsidiaries like PLEDIS (home to SEVENTEEN and FROMIS9), KOZ Entertainment (Zico agency, he is a soloist now but was part of the group BLOCK B, a group who was more on the hiphop side which was rare at this period of Kpop when they debuted / They just debuted a boygroup called BOYNEXTDOOR), SOURCE MUSIC (home to LE SSERAFIM, they had a popular girlgroup called GFRIEND but they got disbanded). You also have ADOR (who have NEWJEANS) and BELIFT LAB were ENHYPEN is. They also have TXT and I think they are still under the name BIG HIT - Talking about agency, I don't know if you will go deeper than BTS but you also have three agencies who were called "BIG 3" back in the day, now we say BIG4 since HYBE is here too, they are called like that because they are four of the biggest agencies SM ENT : Home to TVXQ, SUPER JUNIOR, Girls' Generation, SHINee, EXO, Red Velvet, BoA, NCT, aespa, SuperM/GOT the beat (both SUPERM and GOT the beat are groups formed with members from the differents groups you can find in SM ENT) They are know for having a lot of good vocalist (TVXQ have Changmin, EXO is know to have one of the best vocal line, Girls' Generation have Taeyeon who is also a well know soloist etc, SHINee have Onew and Jonghyun) but I know they have amazings dancers too, Taemin (SHINee) and Kai (EXO) are well know and popular dancers among Kpop fans especially Taemin he is always considered one of the best with J-HOPE and Jimin (BTS), Taemin is in SHINee but also have a solo carrier (like a lot of SM artists), when it's come to solo songs his songs are really good, he also do songs in Japenese. Since you watch animes, TVXQ is know for two popular opening which are SHARE THE WORLD and WE ARE, who are ONE PIECE Openings (OP 10 and 11 I think) and you also have BoA, she is a soloist and did FAIRY TAIL OP15 (MASAYUME CHASING = GMG ARC). Both are extremely popular in Asia, Boa is know as Queen of Kpop especially because she was one of the first to expand Kpop in at least Asia Girls Generation back in the day were know as National Girlgroup in Korea NCT is one of their popular boygroup right now, NCT have multiples sub-unit (some groups tend to do this, take some members and divide them into another group) but NCT had a whole concept who give headache, they also have a lot of foreigners members. (so they have songs in different version like Chinese, Japanese, English). Their Chinese members are in a sub-unit called WAYV Right now, three EXO members sued the agency, they are from the sub-unit EXO CBX (SM had a lot of lawsuits with some of their artists, like TVXQ started as 5 and 3 members sued the label, EXO had Chinese members but most of them sued and wanted to terminate contract) YG ENT : Home to BIGBANG, 2NE1 (the members left), BLACKPINK, WINNER, TREASURE, soon BABYMONSTER. (iKON was in it but left) They were a agency who popularised Hip Hop in Kpop, have several idols know for their rap. BIGBANG and 2NE1 were big groups back then, BIGBANG is well know for FANTASTIC BABY / BANG BANG BANG and 2NE1 is well know for their song I AM THE BEST. Like I said really know for their rappers for example : CL (2NE1), GDRAGON (BIGBANG), MINO (WINNER), they had BOBBY (iKON) and B.I (he left iKON, he is now soloist, he is more in the khiphop side now, saw him in a festival, he was fire) . They have good dancers, Lisa from BLACKPINK is really good and Minzy who was in 2NE1, when it's come to vocal I think they have a lot of vocalist who got unique vocal tone. Also PSY was in YG when he released GANGNAM STYLE (now he have his one agency, he also had a song with SUGA from BTS who is dope if interested) JYP ENT : Home to 2PM, TWICE, Stray Kids, ITZY, NMIXX and two bands/rock bands who are DAY6/Xdinary Heroes STRAY KIDS is one of the most popular 4th gen boygroups at the international (I personnally have songs I like from them but also dislike) TWICE was well know for their bright/cute songs, they had some change of concept from time to time ITZY I liked their songs at the start, right now I'm less into it and NMIXX have a lot of musics who feel experimental (?), you might find them a bit weird at the first listen. I personnally like their bands more I won't lie and 2PM is a old gen group I appreciate. I'm less into JYP artists so I can't really give you informations ---- You talked about Namjoon looking like an anime character in the MV, actually it's understable even Jimin (the one at the start), one member of the boyband in the animated movie of TURNING RED even ended up being inspired by him Talking about BTS in general, I follow less what they do now then before also some of their members are now enlisted in military (my two favorites members actually : J-HOPE [you liked in style] and Jin) so right now a lot of the members are releasing solo stuff. I think their fans will tell you way more about them then me, I'm better at talking about Kpop in general if you have question on it Honestly speaking I'm actually less into Kpop right now (if we see my TOP Spotify, most of the songs in it are from survival show), I'm more of a 2th-3th gen stan pr when it's come to the new generation, I'm more into the girlgroup or I love boygroup a bit less know (it's unfortunate some don't get spotlight) . Just for you to not get lost, Kpop is divided into generation : 1st Generation: 1992 - 2003 (Seo Taiji and Boys, H.O.T, S.E.S, g.o.d, Shinhwa) 2nd Generation: 2003 - 2012 (TVXQ, SS501, BIGBANG, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, KARA, Wonder Girls, INFINITE, TEEN TOP, 2PM, BEAST, SECRET) 3rd Generation: 2012 - 2018 (B.A.P, NU'EST, EXO, BTS, BTOB, SEVENTEEN, TWICE, MAMAMOO, EXID etc) 4th Generation : 2018 - Still now [However people say 5th gen start now] (STRAY KIDS, ATEEZ, TXT, ITZY, G-IDLE, THE BOYZ, STAYC, IVE etc) ---- I'm glad you liked what you listened, BTS is a great start for non fans I feel like because I think their musics fit everyone, not like some Kpop groups who are very experimental and it's like : you like or not. I know some people tend to be reluctant about listening Kpop and trying, when what's good about it, is the fact they are actually a lot of differents concepts and genres a group can do. Like if you love hiphop, some groups are really good with it, some others use rock element or even jazzy one, you have some group who are more on the classy/sexy side, others who have latin sound (VAV - SENORITA, O SOLE MIO - SF9, EGOTISTIC - MAMAMOO) others have fun, weird and silly concept, others use really darker/horror concept and you also can have ballad songs. You even have groups with storyline (cosmic, science-fi, BTS did one they tackled the concept of Youth a lot and at some point they did a storyline about self-love, they have a whole Universe but this one is complicate to explain) also a lot of Music Video are impressive even some stages/performances. If you want more recommandation : - KARD is a co-ed group (2 boys and 2 girls) which are rare in Kpop - Bands exist so here some you can check out : DAY6, N.FLYING (they did an anime medley and also a League Of Legend OST one) , ONEWE, THE ROSE, XDINARY HEROES, LUCY (they have a violinist), CNBLUE/FTISLAND (they are olders band) - Recommending also soloist : Chungha (went to see her in live, a queen), Kang Daniel (especially his song PARANOIA), definitely Taemin otherwise Sunmi, Boa, I talked about him but also recommend B.I (he is a Khiphop artist now not Kpop but still), especially his song BTBT and KEEP ME UP, I didn't know his solo song before I saw him at the festival in February but those two are really good - If you want fun, weird, camp and silly song/music video : WJSN CHOCOME, ORANGE CARAMEL, CRAYON POP (especially BAR BAR BAR) [I dont think you will like but for laugh and giggle 😂) - Darker concept : VIXX (VOODOO DOLL especially, I like FANTASY too, this group is know as Concept Kings), NATURE- Girls, PINK FANTASY (Poison and Fantasy) - If you want vocal for day, I recommend BTOB, they do ballad but are very versatile in their music (one of their most popular song is I'll be your Man) - If you want to start with popular groups : EXO / BTS / BLACKPINK / NCT / STRAY KIDS / ATEEZ / TXT / ENHYPEN / SEVENTEEN / THE BOYZ / IVE / G-IDLE / AESPA / LE SSERAFIM - Boygroup in the middle (when it's come to popularity) that I like : ONEUS / PENTAGON / SF9 / A.C.E / BTOB (really popular but in Korea) / not sure about them but TEMPEST is one of 4th gen boygroup I like I will just list you my favorite groups : BOYSGROUP - B.A.P (disbanded, most of them are soloist or actors, but if you want to see a music video who is like a movie SKYDIVE and ONE SHOT are here, they are one of those group who fighted for the right to have more freedom in creating their music, they often talked about mental health in their song or at least a lot of their songs had social messages. Around 2012, they were one of the popular boysgroup with EXO, especially at the international, they even shut down Time Square when they went to US but unfortunately ended up suing their company for slave contract, they had to take a break for a long time and little by little lost some popularity) - ONF (they arent a well know group among international fans, they are in the middle tier when it's come to popularity, it's a group with a storyline, linked with a lot of science-fi concept, also end of the world/parallel dimension. Their son WE MUST LOVE is non-fan favorite and their song WHY is the fan favorite) - IN2IT (in the nugu tier = not popular at all so if you want views, I don't recommend reacting to them but they have songs who suit my taste so) GIRLSGROUP - WJSN They had a cosmic theme/storyline at the start of their carrier but they also tried different styles at the end . They also have two sub-unit : WJSN CHOCOME (more bright, funny, camp and weird, I recommended it) and WJSN THE BLACK (more on the sexy side) - DREAMCATCHER I think you might like them, they are very different from usual girlsgroup I feel like, they have some rocks elements incorporated with others genres. I often see people who like animes usually liking DREAMCATCHER so I'm recommending in case - PURPLE KISS PURPLE KISS concept is a little Halloween-esque but turned a bit quirky/fun (NERDY and ZOMBIE represent well this) but my favorite songs are PANZONA and SWEET JUICE they are a bit darker. Their other song memeM is a typical song a group from 4th gen could do For the scounting process (if you want to see for BTS members I think you can find on internet) but in general : - Some say they got scouted in the street (it's real, someone from an agency can just come at you and say they want you to try and do the audition), I still think they have to pass an audition but im not sure, also when it's come to audition, each agency have different skill they want you to have more than another one - After the audition, honestly the road is still long for some of them. It's always depend of what the company want to do. Sometime you pass the audition but you have to train and you don't know when you will debut, I think a lot of company have assessment during those period, if you don't improve etc they could say you are out. Some people train for yearsss before finally debuting and it's still not the end - You talked about survival show, the Koreans industry have a lot of differents survival show. You have things like PRODUCE series or GIRLS PLANET 999/BOYS PLANET where trainees goes in hope to debut here, if you don't make it, futur aren't certain also some idols go to those survivals show because they need popularity boost. You actually have special survival show who take idols group to try to boost them, this year we had PEAK TIME (they competed in group), the concept was to provide opportunities to groups that have been hit by the pandemic, are not well-known (due to taking long breaks/frequent member changes) or they have disbanded or recently debuted and need a boost of publicity. THE UNIT was also similar, they intended to give another chance for idols who have already debuted but failed to gain the spotlight however here they were creating two groups (boygroup and girlsgroup) and they were competiting individually. Sorry for the long comment Hope it give you enough informations, if you need more don't hesitate to ask. I know Youtube Original have a serie about Kpop, called Kpop Evolution if you are really curious, they have several episode but each have differents topic I think one episode talk about the trainees period, the assessment also the making of music video, it's diverse

BTS are my favorite group to ever exist. I listen to other Kpop but BTS will always be my number one. I'm not sure how much you guys are going to look into them, but there is a video guide called "Introduction to BTS: the Bangtan 7" by Taylor Mari on Youtube and its long but it gives you a really good idea of just why these guys are as big as they are, besides their talent when it comes to music :) A shorter intro video to watch would be "This is BTS: introduction to BTS" by xceleste on youtube. It's a bit older, but still gives you a better idea about the group. Love you guys :)

"W H O O O O O O YEA BABY THATS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR" honestly i used to be super into kpop several years ago, and it's not that i dislike it now or anything but my interest's have just shifted. nonetheless, bts was one of my favourite bands, nope probably my favourite band at the time, been listening to them since 2015 and it was so satisfying to see them grow from such a small band to how popular they are right now, they have people that hate on them for no reason and that is what i call a popularity milestone right there. dont know much about the songs they've released in the past 3-4 years, they should be in the army temporarily right now if i'm correct but they'll be back and i'm just glad to see them happy. their songs and lyrics carry genuine meaning especially their love yourself albums, got a lot of people through tough times
