Gray was always known to be fast with his maker magic since his fight with Racer during the Oracion Seis/Nirvana Arc. I also liked how much respect he shows Ur and how much he regrets disrespecting her teachings as a kid which gaves him freedom and choices in life and how he fights. The fact that Mashima brought back his line of not losing to the same opponent more than once was peak. It's a unique way for a character to improve without "an ass pull" even though it might feel like it to some.
