What to do with patreon exclusive comic? (Patreon)

Hello my Patrons!  
I'd like a piece of advice from you.  
I've came to know there are websites specialized in requesting and posting stolen Patreon content. I've been very anxious in the past few months, because I've discovered a request post about my exclusive comics. It's been there, but until now it was mostly ignored. That comics is for you, and I was able to create it thanks to you, and I'm feeling really uneasy knowing there is a possibility that somebody steals it and I won't be able to do anything. What should I do? Should I hide it for a while and hope they forget about it, should I release the pages outside? Please, tell me what do you think about this situation.

If you'd make it public it would reach more people which is always a good thing. Rather than waiting for the theft to happen you should use it for your benefit ☺️

Making it public like Thax said is a good choice. It would get you more exposure and possibly more patrons. But I think the only way to keep them private and exclusive to patrons would be to upload a very small resolution, and then message each patron a copy with a different watermark or filename, or something in the metadata. That way if it gets uploaded somewhere else you can look at the watermark or the metadata and figure out who did it, and then ban them from your Patreon.

While posting it publicly would theoretically gain you more exposure, (which could be achieved by releasing other artwork) I don't think it's a long term solution. If the idea is "go public before the thief does", then you'll always be forced to go public, because there will always be someone requesting your exclusive content. If not now then certainly as you gain more exposure. Honestly I'm not sure what you should do. The ideal scenario is to catch the thief, as SoMA suggests. You could try talking to other high profile artists to see what they do. It's no easy nut to crack. But we're with you!

Hm, you would have to only message it to patrons, and not display it on Patreon itself, right? Otherwise the thief could just rip it right off there, and it wouldn't have the personalized watermark. Perhaps I'm wrong about that.

That's why I said that a very low res version should be posted to the Patreon, or even a little preview sliver that is just a preview of the piece. Stepanda would send us copies of the comics with a custom watermark, or even a locked metadata content that cannot be altered. Perhaps even both, that way if the watermark is erased then the metadata would still be present and traceable. That way it would discourage reuploads elsewhere, and if they did reupload their versions we would know who did it.

Most other artists just do time limits on exclusivity and eventually post the content. I think that's a nice compromise. People who pledge get the latest updates while those who don't have to wait a month or two or three for you to post stuff elsewhere.

My idea to help counter any theft could work, I think. You could just post little previews of the comic instead of the full pieces for us to download from here. If any of us wanted the full resolutions then we could message Stepanda, and she could alter the files so that they are unique to our possessions. Either through watermarking or metadata signatures. It would be a little extra work to make it work, but it would prevent thieves from reuploading the files without you knowing who has done it. I want to continue doing exclusive content, but I won't create banners, so only my Patrons will know about my comics. After this one there are two comics I'm planning and everyone will be able to see those, even if the Patreon version will have a higher resolution.
