I love this episode SO MUCH! It gives me all the feels. And no knock on Arthur Darvill, who I think is very underappreciated, but this episode just wouldn't have worked with Rory around. Holly definitely has a point about the risks of time travel. To me, it goes back to what 10 told Donna under Mount Vesuvius: the Doctor can see the "fixed points" in time that can't be changed, and the things that can. It explains his response of "I'm not so sure" when Amy is expecting lots of new paintings.

If we’re going to have a whimsical time travel fantasy that touches our hearts, then the Doctor is bound to break his own rules or contradict himself. Lose the whimsy, and we’re left with a science-fiction story that wants us to believe the inexplicable paradoxes of time travel can be reduced to a simplistic set of rules any schoolchild can understand.
