I think that the gas thingy couldn't detect that Morty was trying to trick it both because of the distraction and one other very important thing. Remember that episodes with the Rick planet where he was blamed for something another committed? Rick said Morty was the best detection shield from other very intelligent beings. Because he is just too simple/dumb? That gas thing was very smart. Basically it couldn't understand/detect Morty completely!
