Of course, friends help each other all the time and that's what Spike is demonstrating. But the lesson I learned is the equal and opposite: that sometimes, it's okay when your friends and family don't need (or want) your help, and you shouldn't get hung up on feeling that you /have/ to help them. Showing that kind of restraint is hard for some people (including me). This isn't "first year" friendship any more, it's showing that friendship isn't black and white but takes balance. Props to the writers' room for showing their chops in this one, and of course to the animation department for all the reasons Kyle mentioned. Onward and upward!
