The reason the characters are female isn't because of female empowerment, it's because the theme of the show is friendship and, while guy's do value friendship, they aren't as open about it as girls, so it wouldn't make sense for them to be male's. Also, it targets a female audience, and most of the time a show that targets girls will feature a female majority cast, and a show targeting boys will feature a male majority cast. The reason for matching the genders of the characters and the audience is for relatablity. If they wanted to make a show about friendship for guys it wouldn't be called friendship, it would feature male characters, sometimes with a few female's(to teach guys how to get along with girls) and the show would be about the characters working together to accomplish a goal(Voltron is a good example). The reason guys like My Little Pony is because it is because even though guy's aren't as open about their feelings they can still empathize and relate with the characters, and these characters were written to be relatable to everyone.
