I gotta say, one of my favourite things about SGA is how dysfunctional they are compared to SG-1. It makes for fun situations like Rodney and Zelenka shouting at each other, but also presents more opportunities for meaningful character development.

This is the episode Rodney needed to be a well-rounded character. Too often the lead engineer can just fix any problem. Here we see a problem that cannot be solved, and how Rodney handles that. His own Kobyashi Maru.

Lady Beyond The Wall

I love this episode because from the beginning of the show, we kinda had Rodney as the familiar, lovable character to sort of help everyone get invested into this new show with brand new people in a brand new place. And he's been funny, smart and super arrogant at times but not quite on this level. And while this episode still has Rodney carrying a lot of the story, you get to see a different side to him than we normally see. We've obviously seen hints of his arrogance, much more in SG-1 than Atlantis, but he softened a bit in Atlantis uuuntilll.. now. It's an episode where you just really see a lot of his negative traits rearing their head, and you can really get irritated with him, feeling what the rest of the characters feel, at least I do when I watch it! I dunno, it's just nice they finally brought back how he can be a real dick sometimes, lol. And can get really, really obsessive when he thinks he's right. It's some good character development for him, Sheppard, Zelenka, etc. Also: I don't think the rest of the solar system was inhabited by any other "intelligent" beings, like people or aliens, but who knows, one of those planets he blew up could have been a cute cat planet or something. :(

"one of those planets he blew up could have been a cute cat planet or something" Can you imagine, especially with Rodney being a cat person? I think there's also a factor of desperation mixed in. Part of McKay's obsession is that people are always looking to him to science his way out of situations, and this would solve almost every problem, and save who knows how many lives if it worked. Easy to see how the tunnel vision develops. I also like how blunt Caldwell is about what he's after.

Oh, yeah, was a good episode for Caldwell too. His bluntness is refreshing, he doesn't beat around the bush at all. And oh god, I just realized, hopefully the Furlings didn't live in this solar system!

To be honest, McKay really badly messed up here. Could he seriously believe that he had a better understanding than the Ancients on this device? Even the most brillant "scientist" (I know, modern science didn't exist at this era) in Antiquity would not understand today's basic science. And we are only 2000 years away. The Ancients are millions of years ahead of us. McKay was playing the sorcerer's apprentice with a technology that he doesn't understand and he tricked everyone into a second try after the first try ended with a man dying. On Eart, if a man dies in a lab due to an experiment that turned out wrong, the lab would be shutdown for months to do an investigation and if we find out that a scientist didn't follow the safety protocol (doing an experiment without knowing the potential outcomes and without minimizing to a very low level the risk of a potential catastrophe), he can be charged for criminal negligence.
