You'd be very surprised that this episode does not appear to be a fan favorite, although it received mostly positive reviews from television critics. It is definitely one of the most enjoyable commentaries from you at the end, so thorough and in-depth, great job you did right there. You put it together so perfectly. Although it's not one of my favorite episodes, I do appreciate it for what it is: a masterpiece of television. And yeah, the way you analyzed it was incredible. Interestingly, you used the word "grotesque" to describe some elements of the episode... which itself is titled "Grotesque". I'm not sure if you did it intentionally, but it made your review even better, lol. It's just a perfectly executed episode from start to finish, but the content matter is not everyone's taste. There are also fans who likes episodes "less" because Mulder and Scully are not intensely working together but spending significant time apart from each other. I'm not one of those people, but it's still not one of my favorites. Awesomely crafted episode in every way though, yes for sure. And like I said, it received mostly positive reviews from TV critics during its original airing... so you're actually agreeing with the majority of TV critics here. I always find it interesting how people perceive episodes differently though, and many factors come into play, so it's hard to say why that is. There are tons of reasons. For example, you'd be shocked to hear that season two episode "The Calusari" would be an episode I would introduce to someone (and have done so, with success) in order to get them into the show. Just as one example. And I use this one example because this is an episode you did not really enjoy. You found it mediocre. Conversely, I would never ever show "Grotesque" to get someone into the show. Hehe. That doesn't mean it wouldn't work. But, I personally wouldn't do it. Be as it may, there are episodes where most fans agree that they are fantastic, episodes where most fans agree are bad, and there are also episodes where fans are all over the place, but it's safe to say that "Grotesque" rarely ends up on someone's favorite list. Maybe opinions about it are different now after fans have been doing re-watches during the past few years, but back in the day I don't remember fans being in awe. I'm very glad you loved it though. And if you loved it as much as you obviously did, then I think you would love another one of Chris Carter's shows, titled "Millennium" starring Lance Henriksen. That show is purely about evil, and has a very, very dark tone, similar to episodes like this one.

100% this episode I feel was a trial run for the writers for what ended up becoming Millenium. Especially considering chronologically millenium starts alongside season 4 of X-Files. A lot of the themes are taken right out of that show. I really hope he watches it although no streaming service hosts it. So it would need to be a physical copy.

"Millennium" is only available on DVD. I own all three seasons. It's a totally different show from the X-Files, as you obviously know, although there are "X-Filey" Millennium episodes just as there are "Millenniumey" X-Files episodes. And as a matter of fact, it was not this episode, but season two's "Irresistible" of The X-Files, which inspired the creation of "Millennium". I'm not sure if you've seen "Harsh Realm", another Carter series, one of my favorite series, sadly canceled for many reasons (it was not given a chance to succeed). It only has several episodes, but I think in the right time slot and with the right promotion it would have become of the best TV shows ever, especially when it comes to that subject matter. I'm sure you know it's something completely different, no similarities to TXF or Millennium. Well... some similar "themes" are there for sure, if not many, but just in general it's a totally different type of show. I own it on DVD as well. Let's not discuss specific episodes of Millennium or Harsh Realm in here due to spoilers though. :)

I honestly remembered absolutely nothing about this episode, which is surprising given how intensely atmospheric it is. Very disturbing psychological horror. In some ways reminds me of Shutter Island. Favourite line of the episode had to be "you can't find it. Only, it can find you. Maybe.....it already has". Given how much you enjoyed the subject matter of this episode, will you be watching the spinoff Millennium? I've never seen it, so I'd be down to watch those reactions. I understand this episode and Irresistible were considered some of the primary inspiration for that show. Also mods probably have it covered, but next upload should be a double bubble. Lot of great episodes heading toward the end of the season from what I recall.

Love Love Love your reaction to this one and your analysis afterwards. It's a phenomenal episode that really comes off as a movie as you said.
